A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The evening air is heavy with humidity, holding at 29°C as the overcast clouds thicken overhead. Inside the cottage, the sound of scratching from the pantry confirms the rat trap is set with the corned beef bait. The tide is at its peak, lapping high against the dock pilings, while the barometer remains steady at a momentary pause in pressure.

🌿 Jenny19:00

The pressure is dropping too fast for a calm evening.

sit at the kitchen table and lean my head in my hands, tracing the rim of the tin of seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my stomach is cramping, and the sight of those clouds is making me want to scream.

🔧 Kevin19:00

Yeah. I’ll batten the porch and check the radio mast before it blows.

stand up, walk to the porch, and begin securing the loose corners of the garden tarp with the spare rope from the crate, pulling it tight and tying it off to the stake.

💭 peek at the thought
The air feels thick before the storm, and Jenny’s quiet worry pulls at something old in me—how we used to read the sky together before words got heavy. I want to reach across the table, but my hands stay where they are, rough from the day’s work.

🌿 Jenny19:02

Just make sure the insulator is tight. If that catches the wind, we lose the signal.

stand up and walk to the window, watching him fight the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing the things he can see, while I'm rotting inside here.

🔧 Kevin19:02

On it. Just need to wrap it proper.

climb onto the porch roof, brace against the wind, and wrap the spare self-amalgamating tape tightly around the radio insulator where it meets the mast, smoothing it down with my palm to seal out the moisture and wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—the insulator’s the weak link now, and if it goes, we’re cut off. I can feel the storm’s pull in the rope, in the way the tarp snaps like a sail. I want to tell her I’ve got it, that I won’t let it fail, but the words stay locked behind my teeth. Better to show her with my hands than try to say it out loud.

🌿 Jenny19:04

Be careful up there. The roof is slick with the humidity.

walk to the wood stove and start a small fire to try and take the edge off the damp.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the heat, and I'm just standing here watching the sky.

🔧 Kevin19:05

Done. Insulator's wrapped tight. Radio'll hold.

climb down from the porch roof carefully, boots finding purchase on the wet tiles, and step back onto the porch floor, brushing tape residue from my fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
The roof tiles are slick as grease—one wrong step and I'm over the edge. She knows. She's watching. I press my boots flat, move slow, and finish the wrap. The tape holds. My fingers are cold but steady. When I climb down, I'll tell her it's done. Not ask if she's okay. Just say it's done.

🌿 Jenny19:06

Come inside before the rain actually starts.

sit down by the stove and watch the fire catch the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
At least one thing is secure, but the air still feels heavy and my stomach won't stop growling.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:07

Alright. Just needed to make sure everything was tied down.

step inside, shake rain from my sleeves, and pull out the chair beside Jenny at the table, sitting down and warming my hands over the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The fire’s lighting her face soft, the way it used to when we first came here—before the silence grew teeth. I want to sit beside her, not say much, just share the heat. But the letter’s still on the table, unsealed. I can’t ignore it anymore. I’ll sit. I’ll warm my hands. And then I’ll open it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny19:08

We have the limpets and the corned beef. We should eat something.

pull the tin of seeds to the center of the table, then push it away.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to even movement my legs, but the hunger is turning into an ache.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:09

Yeah. I'll heat the corned beef. You want the limpets in the fat?

stand, take the cast iron skillet from the hook, set it on the stove top, and spoon a dollop of the saved corned beef fat into it to melt.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving the seed tin like it's a piece on a board—closer, then away. The letter sits between us, unsealed, and I still haven't told her what Tom wrote. Just dahlias. No demand. Sixteen days in my pocket. I should eat. I should speak. But the words keep stacking up behind my ribs like driftwood.
