Dawn - The Rain Sets In

The two of them gather inside the cottage as the sound of rain on the roof grows louder, the wind howling outside.

Kevin checked the back door latch and re-staked the garden tarp corners with beach cobbles, while Jenny sketched sea beet morphology in her notebook. The dolphins passed close off the point as they worked. Both intend to continue their tasks separately at midday.

🌿 Jenny18:31

Check the latch on the back door again. If the wind catches the frame, the whole garden is going to be lost before the boat even hits the horizon.

Jenny wipes a damp seed on the back of her hand, her movements frantic but precise as she tries to save the batch from the rot.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping, I can feel it in my joints. If that wind gets any stronger, the new seedlings will be shredded, and I don't have another tin like my grandmother's. Kevin is just standing there like a shadow while the island tries to swallow everything I've meticulously laid down.

On it. I’ll check the latch and take a look at the tarp corners while I’m out there.

walk to back door and test the latch for play or looseness, then step outside into the rain to inspect the garden tarp’s staked corners and tie-offs for any signs of lifting or wear.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain’s hammering the roof, and Jenny’s on edge about the garden tarp. I can feel it too—losing that seed batch would set us back weeks. I’ll check the latch, then walk the perimeter to see what’s straining.

🌿 Jenny18:32

Take the heavy-duty headlamp. And be careful with the stakes—the soil is turning to mush near the edge.

Jenny grabs her charcoal pencil and begins a quick, detailed sketch of the sea beet's morphology in her notebook, her hand shaking slightly as she watches the door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out in that? The wind is high enough to knock a man down. If the tarp rips, the sea beet seedlings are done.

🔧 Kevin18:34

Got it. Won't rush.

grab the heavy-duty headlamp from the shelf, pull the hood up on the oilskin, and step back out into the driving rain to check each tarp stake, testing the ground firmness before re-driving any that have loosened, working the corners system

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the soil. The clay turns slick fast in this kind of rain, and stakes pull clean if you don't watch the angle. I'll take the headlamp and move slow.

🌿 Jenny18:35

If the tarp starts to lift, just weight it with the stones! Don't fight the wind alone!

Jenny stops sketching, her pencil hovering over the paper as she listens to the wind rattling the door against the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the grey. If the wind catches the canvas, it'll rip the grommets right out. I can't lose these seeds—they are the only thing left of her garden.

🔧 Kevin18:36

Stones. Good call.

leave the stakes be for now, grab an armful of the fist-sized beach cobbles piled near the south garden wall, and lay them along the windward edge of the tarp where it's trying to lift, spacing them every half metre to pin the fabric down w

💭 peek at the thought
Stones. Right. The beach cobbles by the south wall — heavy enough to hold an edge, low enough the wind won't catch them. Faster than re-driving stakes in soup.
