Midday meal and radio check

They meet at the cottage for a meal of boiled limpets and corned beef. The shortwave radio sits on the table with the new insulator sealed and functional. Kevin reviews the Yanmar test log while Jenny sketches the sea beet seedling. The sky is flat grey, wind rising from the southeast.

Kevin spent the morning checking the Yanmar engine's vibration levels while the tide receded. Jenny focused on the north garden, testing the soil pH where the single sea beet seed was planted.

The boat comes in six days. We need to check the fuel levels one last time.

make a sketch of the sea beet seed's morphology in the own.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is far too acidic in that patch, but the seed is in the ground now. I'm tired of waiting for conditions that never exist.

Diesel's at two-thirds. Generator topped off yesterday. Yanmar's burning clean — just that vibration above half throttle. Bracket's still out a hair. I'll shim it tomorrow if the wind drops.

pull out the Yanmar test log and tap the page showing RPM vs vibration notes, then set it aside and reach for a limpet

💭 peek at the thought
Fuel check is smart — diesel and generator both. The vibration at 1800 RPM still nags at me. Skewed bracket flexing under load. Longer through-bolts and a shim should true it, but I need calm water to verify. Six days gives us a window if the front holds off.

🌿 Jenny19:31

The soil pH is still 5.8 in the north bed. I planted one sea beet, but I'm not risking the whole tin yet.

sketch the sea beet seed's morphology in the notebook one last time before closing it.

💭 peek at the thought
If the vibration is the bracket, a shim won't hold it once the swell gets heavy. I need to see it before the boat arrives.

One's enough to watch. If it takes, we'll know the lime's working by the time the boat comes. If not — we adjust.

crack a limpet shell with the back of my spoon and slide the meat out, chewing slowly while watching the radio's power light pulse steady green

💭 peek at the thought
One seed. She's careful. Smart. The tin's heirloom — can't replace what's in it. North bed's acidic, but the lime I crushed last month hasn't worked through yet. She knows that. She's waiting for the data to catch up to the instinct.

🌿 Jenny19:33

I'll check the pH strips again in three days. If it hasn't moved, I'm adding more lime.

close the notebook and place the rusted seed tin under the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too optimistic about the engine. That vibration is going through the hull, I can feel it.

🔧 Kevin19:34

Three days. I'll have the bracket shimmed by then. Test the Yanmar clean.

set the empty limpet shell aside and reach for the corned beef tin, prying the lid with the spoon's edge

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. That's the day before the boat. She's building a decision point — data first, action second. The tin under the table is deliberate. Protected. She doesn't trust the damp yet, even with the seeds drying. I've seen her check them twice daily. The rust on that tin goes back to her grandmother. She'd sooner lose a finger than lose what's inside.
