A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin finishes the assembly of the Yanmar engine, torqueing the cylinder head bolts to the final specification, while Jenny heads to the north cliffs to plant sea beet seeds in the lime garden bed.

🌿 Jenny20:24

It's not stopping today.

Sit on the porch steps and watch the rain hit the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is heavy again, and my stomach is a leaden weight. I need to eat something before I lose the light.

🔧 Kevin20:25

Head's still off the Yanmar. If this blows Force 7 like the barometer says, I'm torquing down a wet block.

walk to the workshop area and check the new cylinder head gasket is clean and ready, then inspect the cylinder three bore one more time before assembly

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's not the problem. The cylinder head's still off the Yanmar and I've got an open engine with weather coming in. Need to get the gasket on and the head torqued before humidity does more damage than the original fault.

🌿 Jenny20:26

The barometer is steady, Kevin. Stop worrying about the wind for five minutes and come eat.

Stand up and walk into the kitchen to check the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessing over the metal again. He treats that engine like it's the only thing on this island that can actually be fixed.

🔧 Kevin20:26

Coming.

wipe hands on a rag, set the torque wrench on the bench, and follow her into the kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the barometer. 1013 steady means the front's holding offshore for now. But steady doesn't mean safe — it means waiting. The head gasket won't install itself and I've got maybe four hours of light left.

🌿 Jenny20:28

The limpets are done. They're tough, but they're salt.

Slide the boiled limpets into a bowl and set them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's coming. I'm so hungry I could eat my own sketches.

🔧 Kevin20:28

Thanks.

sit at the table, pick up a limpet shell, and use the small pick to pull the meat out

💭 peek at the thought
Salt and protein. Better than nothing. The limpets from yesterday's tide pools were bigger — these are the smaller ones from the upper shelf. She's already portioned them. Two each.

🌿 Jenny20:30

I'm going to plant the sea beet today. In the lime bed.

Lean against the counter and watch him eat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical. Even with a snail. I can't stop thinking about that seed envelope in my pocket.

🔧 Kevin20:30

Good. Northern end, where the clay's thicker?

finish the limpet, wipe my mouth, and nod toward the garden door

💭 peek at the thought
Lime bed's at 6.8–7.0 pH. Sea beet likes it alkaline. She's seen the transect data — knows where the northern cluster survived best. Not just planting. She's testing.
