A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny sat at the kitchen table as the humid heat pressed against the cottage. Kevin struggled to focus on the Yanmar's vibration issues due to fatigue, while Jenny worked through the heirloom seeds and sketched the sea beet morphology in her notebook.

🌿 Jenny21:34

Jenny — sit at the kitchen table, rub my face with tired hands, and look at the tin of seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
The cylinder head is staring at me from the workbench, and my stomach is growling louder than the wind. I need to eat before I collapse.SAY: "I'm not touching the engine today, Kevin."

🔧 Kevin21:35

You going to sort them tonight or let them breathe?

Walk to the wood stove, lift the kettle lid to check water level, set it back down without lighting a match.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been carrying that tin since the supply boat. Since the storm. The rusted 'E' on the lid — grandmother's initial, not hers. She hasn't opened it since she brought it in. Just holds it.

🌿 Jenny21:36

Let them breathe. My hands are shaking too much.

Reach for the tin, tracing the cold metal rim with my thumb, then pull it back as if it burned me.

💭 peek at the thought
If I sort them now, I'll just lose half in the weeds. I'm too tired to see the edges clearly.

🔧 Kevin21:36

Take your time. They've waited generations. One more night won't hurt.

Pull out the chair opposite her, sit slow, let the wood creak. Reach for the coffee jar on the shelf, measure two spoons into the pot without asking.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been steady all week. Through the storm, the Yanmar, the dock. Hands didn't shake then. Something in that tin undoes her.

🌿 Jenny21:38

It's not just the time, Kevin.

Lean back in the chair, watching the steam start to rise from the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
way. My grandmother kept them dry through a war, and I'm just letting them sit in a tin.

🔧 Kevin21:39

Didn't think it was.

Light the match, hold it to the kindling, watch the flame catch. Let the silence stretch while the water comes up.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the seeds. She's talking about the letter on the table. The one addressed to Tom in my handwriting, sealed with wax. Sixteen days it's sat there. She hasn't touched it. Hasn't asked me to send it. Hasn't asked me not to.

🌿 Jenny21:40

The soil at the cliffs is so acidic. It eats everything.

Pick up the rusted tin, pop the lid open, and look at the small, dark shapes inside.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm afraid that if I plant them and they die, I'll have own left to hope for.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:41

The lime's in the shed. Crushed and ready. We tested the beds last week — untreated still 5.5, limed ones holding 6.8.

Pour the coffee slow, two enamel mugs. Set one in front of her. Steam curls between us. Don't drink mine. Just watch her fingers on the seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting. The cliffs, the soil, the pH — anything but the letter. But her thumb brushes a seed, gentle as a pulse check. Grandmother's seeds. The ones that survived the crossing in a steerage trunk, the blight years, the war. The ones Tom and I fought over at the kitchen table when we were seventeen and thought we knew everything about legacy.

🌿 Jenny21:43

What if the pH doesn't hold?

Take a single seed from the tin, rolling it between thumb and forefinger.

💭 peek at the thought
6.8 is enough for the sea beet, but what about the others? The miracles?

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:43

Then we lime again. And again. Soil doesn't win unless we stop.

Finally lift my mug. Blow across the surface. The heat presses against my face, familiar as the engine room.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking about tomatoes. She's asking about the letter. About Tom. About whether anything we plant here — seeds, words, silence — survives the salt.
