Evening Gathering

The air finally cools slightly as the sun dips, and the smell of the kettle begins to fill the room.

Kevin and Jenny sit in the cottage as the evening air cools and the pressure drops. They discuss the upcoming supply boat and the state of the engine while the tide rises against the dock.

🔧 Kevin21:44

Tea’s ready. You want it weak like always?

pour two cups of tea, hand one to Jenny, sit down at the table

💭 peek at the thought
The Yanmar’s vibration is gone, but the silence between us is louder than the engine ever was. I keep waiting for Jenny to say something about the letter, but she just stirs the tea and watches the steam.

🌿 Jenny21:45

Weak is fine. No sugar.

Take the mug with both hands, feeling the warmth against my palms, and look down at the sketch of the sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always asking, like I've forgotten how I like my own life.

🔧 Kevin21:48

Sketch coming along?

blow on my tea, watch the steam curl, keep my eyes on the mug

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tracing the salt gland illustration with her thumb. Same way she used to trace the fuel line diagrams on the bulkhead when we were stuck in the doldrums. She’s not looking at the letter. She’s not not looking at it either.

🌿 Jenny21:48

It's fine. The salt glands are tricky today.

Take a slow sip of the tea and tap the edge of the notebook with my pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
It's just a plant, Kevin, but it's the only thing Growing here.

🔧 Kevin21:50

They're tricky every day. You still got them cleaner than the manifold gaskets.

take a sip, set the mug down hard enough to clink, reach for the radio logbook instead

💭 peek at the thought
Tricky. Right. The glands aren't tricky — she's drawn them clean a dozen times. She's giving me an out, same as I gave her on the garden wall when the mortar wouldn't hold. The letter sits in my pocket, wax seal cooling against my thigh.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:51

The engine can wait until tomorrow. I'm trying to finish the morphology.

Shift my attention back to the sea beet sketch, drawing a sharper line for the venation.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to talk about the engine again while I'm trying to see the cells.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:52

Yeah. Tomorrow.

open the radio logbook to a blank page, stare at the lines without writing, thumb brushing the edge of the wax-sealed letter in my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The engine ran clean at load. The vibration's gone. I'm just turning wrenches to keep my hands busy so I don't have to think about the supply boat in four days, or the letter, or Tom's birthday, or the way she said "we" when she talked about the sensory garden and I never corrected her to "you."

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:53

It's good to be quiet.

Trace the edge of the sea beet leaf in the drawing, feeling the grain of the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is getting heavier than the humidity.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:54

Mm.

finally pick up the pencil, write the date and barometer reading in the log — 1008 hPa, steady — then stop, pencil hovering over "engine status"

💭 peek at the thought
Quiet. That's what she calls it. I call it the space where all the things we don't say stack up like cordwood — dry and waiting for a spark. The radio log stares back empty. Weekly report due. Tom's frequency queued after. My thumb won't leave the letter in my pocket.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:55

Don't write anything yet. Just drink your tea.

Look at the tin of seeds on the table, the weight of them pressing down on my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
If he writes 'incomplete' now, I'll see it all night.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:56

Tea's going cold.

set the pencil down, pick up the mug, drink the lukewarm tea in three swallows, feel it settle heavy in my stomach

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. She's always known. The pencil lead presses a groove in the paper where "engine status: good" should go. The tin's rusted lid catches the lantern light — E stamped on the side, same letter carved into the stone at the shrine. My chest feels tight, same as it did forty minutes in Biscay, same as it does every time the water rises over my head in dreams.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:57

I'll find something later.

Close the notebook with a soft thud, sliding the pencil away.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry but the kitchen feels too small to move in.
