Pre-Storm Tension

Kevin stands over the dinghy on the dock, checking the Yanmar bolts while the wind begins to pick up. Jenny is standing nearby, watching the barometer needle drop as the sky darkens over the water.

Kevin secured the dinghy with a second heavy line through the mooring ring to the seawall bollard, then ran to the garden to re-stake the flapping tarp corner. Jenny grabbed the heavy weather line from the porch and sprinted back to the dock as the barometer dropped to 1008 hPa.

Barometer's moving. You want the radio first or the dinghy lines?

tighten the Yanmar mount bolts on the dinghy with the torque wrench, working methodically from port to starboard

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing northeast faster than the barometer said it would. Dock planks held last night but the seaward bolts will need checking again before the tide peaks. Jenny's watching the glass — she knows what a three-millibar-an-hour drop means better than most.

Lines. Definitely the lines. The swell is going to change soon.

Walk to the end of the jetty and check the tension on the dinghy's forward spring line.

💭 peek at the thought
He's still in his mechanical rhythm. The sky is bruising, and that needle is diving.

🔧 Kevin21:10

Forward spring’s holding. I’ll back it up with a second line aft — run it through the mooring ring and take it to the bollard on the seawall. You watch the barometer; if it drops another two in ten minutes, we double everything.

run a new half-inch three-strand line from the dinghy’s aft cleat, through the mooring ring mortise, and secure it to the old timber bollard on the seawall with a round turn and two half-hitches, then take up the slack with a trucker’s hitc

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — spring line takes the surge first. If that gives, the boat’ll yaw into the pilings before we can get a second line on it. Wind’s already lifting the loose tarp corner by the garden.

🌿 Jenny21:10

It's already at 1008. We're not waiting ten minutes.

Step back toward the cottage porch to grab the heavy weather line.

💭 peek at the thought
1009 and falling. He's fast with a knot, I'll give him that, but he's ignoring the smell of the air.

🔧 Kevin21:12

Go. I’m right behind you.

finish cinching the trucker’s hitch on the aft line, lock it off, then jog toward the garden with the mallet and two spare stakes to re-secure the flapping tarp corner before the wind tears it free

💭 peek at the thought
Two millibars in the time it took me to tie that knot. She’s not wasting breath. The heavy weather line’s already rigged as a second stern spring — she’ll take it to the midships cleat and that’ll be three lines sharing the load. Smart. My ankle’s stiff but the brace holds. I’ll get the garden tarp corner pinned down before the gusts tear it loose, then check the seaward bolts on the dock.

🌿 Jenny21:13

Fix the tarp, then get back to the dock!

Grab the heavy weather line from the porch hook and run back toward the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
He's jumping from one fix to the next. The garden can wait three minutes; the boat can't.
