Doubling the dinghy lines before the storm

Kevin and Jenny stand together on the jetty in the rising wind. The heavy weather line lies coiled at their feet. The dinghy tugs at its three springs — forward, aft, and now the new heavy line from the bow. The barometer reads 1007 hPa and falling fast. Rain spits on the water. They need to decide whether to run a fourth line or trust the three.

Kevin and Jenny secured the dinghy with an extra warp line, then went inside to warm up. Kevin checked the bow eye and spring for chafe while Jenny retrieved the spare warp from the locker. After making the line fast, they headed to the cottage to get out of the rain.

🌿 Jenny21:15

It's tugging too hard. Let's run a fourth, just in case.

Reach down and grab the end of the heavy weather line.

💭 peek at the thought
Three lines should be enough if the doubler plate holds, but that groan in the mortise is unsettling. Better to be over-secured than dredging the bay for a dinghy.

🔧 Kevin21:15

Fair. Grab the spare warp from the locker. I'll take the bow eye.

walk to the dinghy's bow, crouch to check the bow eye and existing spring for chafe, then wait for Jenny with the spare warp

💭 peek at the thought
Three springs already. The bow's taking the load clean. A fourth line means more chafe points, more to fail. But she's right — the barometer's falling fast and the dinghy's light. If the wind shifts southwest, the fetch opens up. Better to have it and not need it.

🌿 Jenny21:16

On it.

Walk back to the dock locker, open the hatch, and retrieve the spare warp.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the hardware. I hope the locker isn't flooded again.

🔧 Kevin21:16

Make it fast to the starboard cleat. Full round turn and two half hitches. I'll take the strain on this end.

hold the bitter end of the spare warp, feed the working end through the bow eye, and pull slack as Jenny works the cleat

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's moving. The bow eye's sound — stainless, no deformation. The existing heavy weather line's splice is holding. Chafe guard's intact where it passes the gunwale. This fourth line goes to the starboard cleat, not the ring. Spreads the load. Keeps the bow from yawing if the wind clocks round.

🌿 Jenny21:18

Hold it steady for me.

Wrap the heavy weather line around the cleat, making the full turn and securing the two half hitches.

💭 peek at the thought
The tension is getting high. I need to get this knot set before the wind picks up more.

🔧 Kevin21:19

Done. Let's get inside before we're soaked through.

pull the last slack through, cinch the hitches tight, then coil the bitter end and hang it on the cleat horn

💭 peek at the thought
Cleat's solid. Her hands know the knot. The line beds in clean — no crossing turns, no slack. The dinghy surges, the warp takes weight, and the bow settles. Four springs now: forward, aft, heavy to the ring, heavy to the cleat. Load's spread. She's breathing hard. Rain's coming down proper now.

🌿 Jenny21:20

I'm coming.

Wipe my hands on my jeans and follow him toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is getting through my shirt. I need to check that cylinder head again before I get too cold.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:21

Kettle's on the hook. You want first watch on the radio or the stove?

step onto the porch, kick mud off boots, reach for the door latch to pull it shut behind us

💭 peek at the thought
She's right behind me. The path's slick with wet grass. Cottage door's ajar — forgot to latch it. Stove's still warm from this morning. Radio's on the table, logbook open. The letter to Tom sits where I left it, wax seal intact. Barometer on the wall reads 1006 now. Falling faster. We've got maybe two hours before this hits proper. Need to check the generator fuel, shut the shutters, secure the porch gear. She'll want tea. I'll want the radio.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:22

Radio. I'll check the frequency.

Step into the kitchen, shed my wet jacket, and head for the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm freezing, but the barometer is dropping. I need to hear the weather report.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:23

Stove and shutters. I'll bring the log in after.

hang jacket on the peg, lift the kettle off the hook, fill it from the tank tap, and set it back on the stove to boil

💭 peek at the thought
She takes the radio. Good. Her ears are better for the static. I'll take the stove and the shutters. The generator's got fuel for three days at full load — checked it yesterday. Porch has the spare tarp, the tool bag, the coil of degraded rope that's no good for load but fine for lashing down the generator cover. Shutters on the seaward side first. Wind's already gusting. Rain hammers the roof. Barometer's at 1005. Dropping ten millibars in twenty minutes. This'll be a long night.
