The Storm Breaks

The wind picks up, rattling the shutters, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof.

The heavy air hangs motionless as the barometer holds at 1007 hPa. Kevin works on the Yanmar's reassembly while Jenny attempts to manage the damp heirloom seeds in the humid heat.

Reckon that's our weather.

Stand and pull on my oilskin jacket, heading for the porch door.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer suggested. Need to check the dinghy lines one more time before the swell builds.

Don't stay out long, the tide is coming in high.

Watch him through the glass, then pick up my pencil to return to the sketch of the sea way leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out into that now? The barometer is dropping too fast for god's sake.

Won't be long.

Step out onto the porch, pull the door shut behind me, and walk down the path toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. Spring high with this wind means the dock takes a pounding. Check the chafe points and the new stern spring, then get back inside.

(I say nothing, just watch the door click shut.)

Sit at the kitchen table and listen to the rain start to hammer on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so stubborn. The island doesn't care about his schedule.
