Evening meal and weather watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with tea and a simple supper. Rain hammers the roof in gusts. The barometer reads 1014 hPa. Through the window the dock lines strain against the rising chop.

The air pressure continues to drop as a heavy, humid stillness settles over the island. The tide has retreated far from the shore, exposing slick rocks and drying kelp.

Boat's not landing tomorrow in this.

lift tea mug, blow steam off it, watch the window

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropped another two millibars since I last looked. Northeast wind backing — that'll push swell right into the dock. Bow line's already singing. If the supply boat comes tomorrow it won't get near the dock in this. Should've doubled the chafe gear this morning when I had light. Tea's hot. Hands are cold.

Then I'll have more time to finish the rideline map.

make sketch: the unidentified succulent by the spring.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I have another ten days of this silence and this soil. The acidity is eating at my nerves, and I'm terrified the grandmother's seeds will just rot.

Mm.

set mug down, reach for the notebook on the shelf, flip to a blank page, slide it across the table toward her

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Weather holds us, work shifts. Rideline map's been waiting. She's steady with the pencil — noticed that. The succulent by the spring, she's drawn it three times now. Different light each time. Smart. Knows what she's doing even if she says she doesn't.

🌿 Jenny22:38

Thanks.

pick up the pencil and start drawing the succulent's' edges.

💭 peek at the thought
He's giving me the space, but I'm too tired to fill it. I need to see those leaves clearly before the rain washes the color out.

🔧 Kevin22:38

Cleat on the dock's worked loose before. Might need a look at first light.

wrap both hands around the mug, thumb tracing the chip in the rim

💭 peek at the thought
Pencil scratches paper. Rain on the roof. Radio static in the corner. This is the rhythm now. She draws. I watch the dock lines through the window. The bow line's chafe point — that old hose section — it's holding but the angle's wrong. Wind's steady northeast, twenty-five, thirty knots gusting. If the cleat pulls, the dinghy goes. Should check it. But the mug's warm in my hands and the storm's not done with us yet.

🌿 Jenny22:39

I'll check it after I head to the spring.

sketch the thick, waxy margins of the artwork's leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything is coming loose. The boat, the marriage, the soil. If that cleat goes, I'm stuck here until the next tide turns.
