The Approaching Storm

Kevin and Jenny meet at the kitchen table as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof. The smell of ozone and wet earth fills the air while the wind increases.

Kevin and Jenny moved their dinghy rigging work inside as the barometer dropped to 1017 hPa. Kevin secured the porch gear and prepared chafe protection for the dock lines while Jenny started a fire and checked the rain gauge.

The weather is turning. I'm not making it to the ridge today.

Close the notebook and slide it into the seed tin. Walk to the wood stove to start a fire.

The pressure is dropping too fast. If I go out to the rideline now, the path will be a slide of mud and I'll lose the sketches. My hands are cramping and my stomach is growling.

She's right. The barometer's dropped another two millibars since I checked it on the dock — squall's moving faster than forecast. The dinghy's half-rigged and the spar's still on the porch. Need to get the canvas under cover before it soaks through, and the oarlock's still loose on the bench. Fire first though. She's cold.

Rain's hammering now. She's out in it checking the gauge — stubborn. The gauge is on the roof edge, six feet up. Wind'll take her if she's not careful. But she knows that. I've got the oarlock and file. The transom bracket's still cracked on the dinghy. If this blow holds, the dock lines'll chafe through by morning. Should double them. But the stove's going, the canvas is dry, she's alive. One thing at a time.

She does. That's not the point. The dock's taking a beating — seen the bow line jerk three times since I looked. Chafe point's at the cleat on the dinghy. If that parts, the boat goes broadside into the rocks. I've got chafe gear in the locker: old hose, canvas wraps. But the locker's on the dock. Going out there now is stupid. Stupid gets you killed. Wait for the lull. If there is one.
