← Day 3

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

The Approaching Squ

Kevin is at the dock inspecting the dinghy, while Jenny is inside the cottage sorting the seed tin.

Kevin attempted to work on the dinghy rigging but the rising wind and falling pressure made precision tasks nearly impossible. Jenny tried to map the rideline and collect ash, but the damp air and encroaching clouds slowed her progress significantly.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You lean your weight against the transom, listening for any groans of metal. The low tide has exposed the slick barncovered rocks beneath the pilings.

🔧 Kevin22:12

Kevin — check the mast step on the dinghy, then walk back to the cottage porch for the spar and canvas

💭 peek at the thought
The transom bracket weld held overnight. No fresh rust weeping at the seams. Tide's coming in — another hour and the hull'll be floating. Need to step the mast and check the sail balance before the wind picks up proper. Barometer's still dropping. Storm's not waiting.

🔧 Kevin22:16

Kevin — fit the oarlock into the port gunwale, hang the rudder pintles, then secure the dinghy painter to the dock cleat with a rolling hitch

💭 peek at the thought
Mast stepped clean. The sprit and boom sit true in their notches. Boltrope laced tight — no puckers, no slack. She'll carry canvas now. Wind's freshening from the east, cold behind it. Rain's close enough to taste. Need to get the oarlock fitted and the rudder hung before the chop builds. Jenny'll have the radio on. She hears the forecast before I do.

🔧 Kevin22:20

Kevin — walk up the dock to the cottage porch, grab the shortwave from its hook, and tune to the coastal forecast frequency

💭 peek at the thought
Oarlock seated. Rudder hangs straight. Painter's fast. The dinghy's a boat again — sail, oars, steerage. Not fast, not pretty, but she'll move. Wind's steady east-northeast now, whitecaps showing outside the harbour mouth. Barometer at the cottage read 1012 last I looked. Dropping like a stone. This isn't a blow, it's a system. Supply boat's due tomorrow. She won't make it in this. Need to tell Jenny. Need to check the radio myself.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You spread the seeds out on the notebook, checking for mold or husk damage. The air inside the cottage is growing humid as the pressure falls.

🌿 Jenny22:15

Jenny — make list: inventory of heirloom seeds in the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If it rains hard enough, the ash will just wash away before it reacts with the soil. I need to check the drainage. The barometer is dropping fast. 394 litres in the tank isn't much if the boat is delayed and I can't catch the runoff.

🌿 Jenny22:19

Jenny — walk to the porch to check the own again.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning the color of a fresh bruise. If I don't get that rideline mapped before the rain hits, I'll be guessing in the dark. I'm starving, my stomach is eating itself.

🌿 Jenny22:23

Jenny — make sketch: unidentified succulent by the spring.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood ash is still dry, but the soil is dampening. I need to move fast. I should have brought an umbrella. The wind is picking up. I can't afford to waste a single seed.
