Shared meal and quiet

They are at the garden table, eating boiled limpets and sea beet. The straw bale sits untouched beside Jenny’s sketch. Kevin sharpens a knife while Jenny labels her seedling sketches.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

The salt wind is picking up again. It'll take the sprouts by morning.

Jenny wipes grit from her palm with the back of her hand and stares at the seed tin on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too dry, or maybe I'm just too tired. If this one fails, what have I actually left?

🔧 Kevin18:31

Shade cloth's still holding. Battened it myself at noon. But if the wind backs round to the east past midnight, the corner by the rosemary'll lift.

eat a limpet, watching the treeline for wind direction

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's been steady all day but the wind's shifting — she's right about the salt. Those tomato seedlings won't take another night like the last one without the cloth battened down proper. And she's still not looking at the ankle.

🌿 Jenny18:32

Then I'll have to move the stones. The wall won't hold the pressure.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins sketching the jagged edge of the garden wall instead of the plants.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the cloth will save them, but the salt is already in the air tonight.

🔧 Kevin18:38

I'll take the crowbar and shift the east end stones after dinner. Need to set a batter on the face so the wind slides up, not into it.

finish eating, then stand and stretch left ankle carefully before reaching for the crowbar by the shed door

💭 peek at the thought
She's right again — wind pressure on that corner's been building since yesterday. The wall's only two courses high, no deadman anchors yet. If it fails, the whole bed's exposed. But moving stone now means hauling it uphill with this ankle.

🌿 Jenny18:39

I'll help you level the base. We need it deep or the whole thing will blow out.

Jenny stands up slowly, her back aching, and follows him toward the shed.

💭 peek at the thought
If he's right, the batter might hold, but the soil is still so hungry for something real.

🔧 Kevin18:40

Base is deep enough. Dug it last week. Just need the batter right — one in six. You hold the level, I'll move the rock.

grab the crowbar and a spade from the shed, then walk the garden perimeter to the east corner where the wall meets the slope

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be lifting stone with that back. Or that ankle. But she won't ask me to do it alone, and I won't tell her to sit. That's the trap we're in.

🌿 Jenny18:41

Just make sure it's flush. If the foundation is off, the batter won't matter anyway.

Jenny takes the level from the workbench and follows him to the wall, inspecting the cracks in the mortar.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the stones, he doesn't see the rot in the base.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:42

Foundation's solid. Dug to clay, packed with rubble and lime. It's the face stones shifting. Wind gets under the lip.

wedge the crowbar under the first face stone at the corner, lever it free, and set it aside on the grass

💭 peek at the thought
Mortar's lime-based. Salt eats it slow. She knows that. She's checking because she doesn't trust my eye on level — not since the porch door frame warped last winter. Fair enough.
