Evening garden check and seed planting
Kevin and Jenny meet back at the garden as the trade wind steadies. The treated tomato and basil trays sit under the deployed shade cloth. Two additional lettuce cells show damping-off. The heirloom seed tin rests open on the garden wall. Kevin's ankle throbs as he leans on the spade. Jenny holds the tin, fingers on the rusted edge.
Kevin and Jenny planted a single heirloom seed near the garden wall and discussed soil conditions. Kevin sprayed copper solution on damping-off seedlings in the trays, then fetched straw bale for mulch. Jenny sketched the soil-wall interface and examined exposed roots.
The soil is too dry today.
Jenny reaches into the tin, pulls out a single seed, and presses it into the earth near the garden wall.

Soil's salt, not dry. Wind pulls the moisture before roots find it.
lean on the spade, watching her fingers press the seed in, then reach for the copper spray jar on the wall

It doesn't matter.
Jenny brushes the loose dirt over the seed with the back of her hand, staring at the patch of earth.

Then let it be a marker. One seed, one spot. We'll know if it took.
unscrew the copper spray lid, mix a fresh batch in the jar, then walk to the seed trays and begin spraying the lettuce and pepper cells showing damping-off, keeping the nozzle low to avoid wind drift

We'll see.
Jenny picks up her notebook from the dirt and begins to sketch the exact line where the soil meets the garden wall.

The line moves. Storms shift it. Tides underground push salt where you don't expect.
finish spraying the last pepper cell, set the jar down, and wipe copper residue from my fingers onto my trousers before picking up the spade again

I know.
Jenny presses the pencil to the paper, shading the rough texture of the stone wall.

The wall's sound two courses up. Added lime to the mortar last month. Holds.
drive the spade into the weed-choked border near the wall, turning over a clod of salt-crusted earth, exposing the pale roots of something stubborn still growing

It has to be.
Jenny looks at the exposed roots, her pencil tracing the curve of them in the sketch.

Nothing has to be. But this held.
pull the spade free, knock the clod against the toe of my boot to break it, and let the crumbling soil fall back into the hole, covering the stubborn roots again

The soil is getting too hard.
Jenny reaches into the rusted tin, pulls out a single heirloom seed, and rubs it between her thumb and forefinger.

We didn't mulch deep enough. Wind strips it bare.
walk to the shed, retrieve the straw bale from the corner, and carry it back to the garden wall, dropping it beside her sketchbook
