Midday Heat and Water

The sun is at its peak, and the air is still. You meet at the garden wall to discuss the water situation.

Kevin burned the damping-off infected seedling trays on the south beach, then retrieved the copper spray from the shed. Jenny prepared copper spray solution and treated the remaining healthy tomato and basil trays, but her lettuce and pepper trays showed worsening fungal spread despite treatment. The dock mooring ring remains loose despite cedar and oak wedges.

It's at three hundred seventy-six litres. We have enough for the week, but the greenheart is hollow out on the inside.

wipe soil-stained hands on my jeans and point toward the water level gauge.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is nearly full, but the rot in the dock is spreading faster than I can fix it. I'm planting ghosts today.

Auger spun free at two feet. Heartwood's lace. We're not sistering that — we're replacing. Four new piles, cross-braced, driven at low tide off the dinghy. Tomorrow's tide window is ours.

lean back against the garden wall, arms crossed, watching the water gauge

💭 peek at the thought
Three-seventy-six litres. That's twenty-four down from full. The greenheart's gone to powder inside — knew it when the auger bit didn't bite. Supply boat in three days if the barometer holds. If it doesn't, we ration.

🌿 Jenny18:11

Tomorrow is fine, but I need toion these trays first. The salt wind is already eating the edges of the new soil.

reach into my pocket and feel the cool metal of the seed tin through the fabric.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to replace the whole section while I'm just trying to get one seed to survive in this dirt. Everything here is so heavy, so quick to break.

🔧 Kevin18:12

Tin's still on the shelf. I'll grab the spray after we square the trays. You do the lettuce and pepper — I'll handle the basil and tomato. We'll get them under cloth before the wind picks up.

pull the seed tin from my pocket, flip it open to check the seal, then hand it to Jenny without a word

💭 peek at the thought
She's reaching for the tin — not to take it, just to feel it's there. The salt's already crusting the tray rims. Copper spray's mixed and ready in the old jam jar by the shed. If we don't seal these trays tonight, the damping-off wins.

🌿 Jenny18:13

I'll do the lettuce. It's too sensitive for the heat right now anyway.

take the tin back, my fingers tracing the rusted edge as I look down at the weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just wood and seeds, but if the soil fails, I don't have anything left to show for.

🔧 Kevin18:14

Copper spray's in the jam jar by the shed. Spray bottle hanging on the nail. Don't soak the soil — mist the stems. I'll pull the infected cells and burn them before you start.

turn toward the shed, favouring the left ankle, and pull the two lettuce and three pepper trays showing fuzz, stacking them for the beach

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers on the rust — same way she touched the shrine stone. Tracing what's worn. The lettuce cells are already showing white fuzz at the soil line. Two more since yesterday. She knows. She's choosing the ones that might still make it.
