Heat and Rising Rot

Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock as the heat shimmers off the water. Kevin inspects the greenheart wood for the sister joint while Jenny notes the progress of the peeling paint in her notebook.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

The sister joint’s a no-go. Rot’s through. We’ll need new piles — full replacement. Supply boat’s crane in two days if it comes.

Tap the rotted plank with the crowbar to test its give, then step back and look at Jenny, waiting for her to say what she needs.

💭 peek at the thought
The greenheart’s worse than it looked — black rot runs deep, sistering won’t hold. Needs full replacement. Jenny’s quiet, watching the paint peel. She’s not asking for help. She’s just… here. I should say something real, not about wood or wire.

Then we don't sister it, we bypass it. I need more lime from the boat, not just wood.

Open the notebook and sketch a quick diagram of the 40mm hollow in the timber.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is dead, just like my sleep cycle, but the garden is waiting for me to get the pH right.

Lime. Right. Four bags minimum — two for the garden beds, two for the new pile holes. I’ll add it to the radio call.

Pull the radio handset from the dock locker, key the mic, and call the supply boat on the working frequency.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s already drawn the fix — bypass, not patch. Lime means she’s thinking soil, not structure. She’s been carrying that notebook like a second spine. I didn’t ask what she needed. She just showed me.

🌿 Jenny19:05

Tell them to bring the heavy-grade stuff, not the garden-mix. The soil here is too acidic.

major the sweat from my brow with the back of a hand andTechnical at the shimmering air over the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't show with the lime, those seeds are just going to rot in the dirt.

🔧 Kevin19:05

Heavy-grade lime, not garden mix. Four bags. And two lengths of 150mm stainless through-bolt — 300mm — for the new pile brackets.

Key the mic, give the order to the supply boat skipper, then set the handset down and pick up the brace bit again.

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy-grade lime. She knows the pH logs better than I do — 5.5 untreated, 6.8 where we limed. She’s not just watching. She’s measuring. And she wiped sweat off my face like it was nothing. Like we do this every morning.

🌿 Jenny19:07

We need the stainless too. The salt air will eat the regular bolts by next month.

Drill a pilot hole into the new timber, watching the wood chips fall on the sand.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get the pH balance right, I'm just wasting Grandmother's seeds on a losing battle.
