A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin spent the morning checking the pantry for rat activity and securing the leaking cottage shutter. Jenny focused on the seed trays, monitoring the tomato and lettuce seedlings for fungal growth. The tide is steadily rising, cutting off the lower tide pools.

Kevin — walk into the kitchen, check the radio, then step out onto the porch to look for Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
Back on the porch. The radio's quiet. Jenny's somewhere — garden or shed. My ankle throbs dull and low. The copper spray jar sits on the table where I left it. Seed trays need checking. Dock work waits on the tide. I should find her.

🌿 Jenny19:09

The boat is two days out, Kevin. Stop with the dial. I'm heading to the north ridge.

Jenny wipes dirt from her palms, picks up her specimen press, and walks past the porch toward the slope.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking the radio again. He thinks a signal is going to fix the rot in the dock.

Radio's quiet. Be careful on the ridge.

pick up the copper spray jar and walk to the garden to check the tomato and basil seedlings

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The supply boat's two days out — barometer's steady, wind's holding. No need to hover the dial. She's going north ridge, Carex transect or sea beet. Ankle's talking to me. Garden needs the copper spray. Dock needs pilot holes. She didn't ask me to come. Didn't not ask either.

🌿 Jenny19:11

I'll be fine. Don't drown the basil.

walk toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to the seedlings. I hope he doesn't over-spray them; they can only take so much copper before it stunts the growth.

🔧 Kevin19:12

Won't drown it. Just a breath of copper.

walk to the garden, check seedling trays for damping-off, then apply copper spray sparingly to tomato and basil leaves, focusing on undersides where moisture lingers

💭 peek at the thought
She's sharp. Basil's damp from last night's mist — too much spray invites mold. I'll go light, just a mist on the leaves. North ridge is steep in places. She knows the ground. I'll trust her. Ankle's stiff but holds weight. Garden first, then the dock.
