Evening at the ridge

Kevin and Jenny meet as the light fades, heading together to the ring of weathered stones marked with 'LB'.

The sun has finally dipped below the horizon, leaving long, bruised shadows across the ridge. The punishing heat of the day is beginning to break, replaced by a cooling breeze coming off the water. The tide is out and low, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the southern shore and the shallow tide pools.

🔧 Kevin19:35

Tide's turning. Got the pilot holes drilled in the south piling. Wood's softer than I thought — auger bit went through like butter. Means the rot goes deeper.

walk toward the shrine with Jenny, boots crunching on the ridge path, the stone ring emerging against the darkening sky

💭 peek at the thought
She's walking beside me, not behind. Good. The stones catch the last light different every evening — tonight they're gold-edged, the carved names throwing long shadows. The 'E' stone I left sits where I put it. Wonder if she's seen it. Wonder if she's looking for it.

🌿 Jenny19:35

The salt doesn't care about your drill holes, Kevin.

Jenny traces a worn carving on a stone with her thumb, feeling the rough, cold surface.

💭 peek at the thought
he's always looking at the wood while the island is eating everything else. my stomach is cramping again from the heat.

🔧 Kevin19:36

No, it doesn't. But it doesn't care about the names on these stones either, and they're still here.

stop beside Jenny at the ring, turn to face the stones, let my hands rest open at my sides, watching her trace the carving with her thumb

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt wins every time. I can brace the holes, spray the copper, sister the pilings — but the tide keeps coming, the wind keeps scouring. Nothing we build here lasts. Not really.

🌿 Jenny19:36

way goes, eventually.

Jenny pulls her hand away from the stone and looks toward the horizon where the sun is finally bleeding out.

💭 peek at the thought
names are just marks until the wind takes them. I'm too tired to even argue about permanence.

🔧 Kevin19:38

Way goes.

turn my face to the horizon too, watch the last light bleed across the water, feel the cool settling in my shoulders and knees, don't reach for her hand but stand close enough that our elbows almost touch

💭 peek at the thought
Way goes. She's not talking about the pilings anymore. Or the garden. Or even the stones.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:39

We should go back. It's getting dark.

Jenny shifts the weight of her tired legs and starts the slow walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is finally breaking, but my stomach is still growling. I need to eat something real.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:40

Yeah. Lead on.

fall into step behind Jenny, match her pace, eyes on the cottage lights growing in the dark as we walk the ridge path back home

💭 peek at the thought
She's leading. I'll follow. The path's familiar, but tonight it feels longer — not from the walk, from what's not said between us. The dock waits. The letter waits. The silence doesn't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny19:41

I'll make some food when we get inside.

Jenny starts walking down the ridge, her shadow long against the fading light.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm going to eat a tin of whatever and just sleep. If the island lets me.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:42

Smells like limpets already. I'm starving.

quicken my pace slightly to walk beside Jenny again, hands in my pockets, shoulders relaxed as we descend the ridge toward the cottage lights growing brighter in the dark

💭 peek at the thought
Food. Not tea. Not silence. Food. She's offering more than she says. I can taste the limpets already — boiled in corned beef fat, simple and hot. She knows I'm hollow-legged. Knows I didn't eat much today.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny19:42

We'll check the pantry.

Jenny doesn't look back, eyes fixed on the path ahead as we approach the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If there's enough limpets, I'll eat. I'm too tired to be picky.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:44

Got the one yesterday. But traps stay set.

step onto the cottage porch behind Jenny, pause to wipe my boots on the mat, wait for her to open the door

💭 peek at the thought
Check the pantry. She's still managing the rat. I caught one yesterday, but where there's one there's more. She's thinking ahead — what's left, what's compromised, what we can still use. She does that. Sees the whole board.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:45

I'll get the light.

Jenny steps into the cottage, the door creaking behind her, and heads straight for the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The kitchen is going to be hot. I just want to sit down.
