The walk back home

Kevin and Jenny descend the ridge path together as the cottage lights begin to flicker in the dark.

Kevin and Jenny prepared a meal of limpets and corned beef at the cottage stove. They discussed the water levels and the upcoming supply boat while the tide rose outside the window.

🌿 Jenny19:47

We're almost there. I need to check the water tank before we eat.

Walk toward the cottage, hand brushing the rusted seed tin in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is aching from the ridge, and I can still smell the salt on the wind.

Tank’s down to 349. We’ll top it off if the boat’s late.

walk toward the cottage with Jenny, matching her pace, eyes on the path ahead.

💭 peek at the thought
The rusted seed tin in my pocket — Tom's letter is still on the shelf, unopened. I keep touching it like a worry stone. Jenny’s hand brushing it as we walk… she knows it’s there. Doesn’t say anything. Just walks beside me. The tank’s low after today’s use. I’ll check it with her, then we’ll eat. No need to fill the silence.

🌿 Jenny19:48

Three hundred and forty-nine is enough for now. I'm starving.

Step onto the porch and lean against the whitewashed stone wall, catching my breath.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat is late again, I'm going to lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin19:48

You hungry or just tired? I’ll heat up the limpets and corned beef. You sit.

step onto the porch beside her, not touching, then turn and go inside to light the stove and pull out the pot.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tired. Ankle’s swollen from today. I saw her favoring it on the ridge. Doesn’t complain. Just leans into the wall, breathing slow. I should’ve noticed earlier. Made tea without asking if she wanted it. Again.

🌿 Jenny19:50

Both. The limpets sound good.

Walk into the kitchen and sit at the wooden table, watching him work the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm both. My body feels like it's collapsing in on itself.

(nothing — just the sound of the stove lighting, the pot clinking on the burner)

light the wood stove, put the cast iron skillet on to melt the corned beef fat, then add the limpets from the bucket, covering the pot to steam them open.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching me work — not to judge, just to be near. The way she did when I was fixing the dinghy oarlock. Silent. Present. I don’t need to fill it with talk. Just do the thing right. Heat the fat, add the limpets, let them open. Simple. Honest.

🌿 Jenny19:53

Jenny — reach for my notebook on the table and open to the page with the Carex sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the salt and fat is making my stomach growl. I hope those limpets aren't too rubbery.

🔧 Kevin19:53

(nothing — the limpets hiss and pop in the steam, the stove breathes)

lift the lid, check the limpets, pull two bowls from the shelf, spoon them out with broth and fat, set one in front of her without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s looking at the Carex sketches. The leaf curl measurements. The salt gland density I mapped across the transect. She doesn’t need to ask what they mean. She reads the lines like she reads the garden — sees the stress in the margins, the adaptation in the details. I didn’t show her these. She just… found them. Like she finds everything I don’t say.
