preparing for the boat

Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch as the wind picks up. They are reviewing the supply list for the incoming boat.

Kevin headed to the north ridge to survey the Carex transects and check the soil pH. Jenny stayed at the cottage to manage the heirloom seedlings and deal with the damping-off in the pepper and lettuce cells.

We need more test strips, Kevin. And more lime for the beds—the garden is turning too acidic for the heirlooms.

Make a list of supplies on the back of a weather report with a sharp graphite pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't bring more pH strips, I'm just guessing in the dark, and those seeds will rot in the dirt.

Test strips and lime. Got it.

lean against the porch post, arms crossed, watching her pencil move across the paper

💭 peek at the thought
She's right on both counts. The test kit's down to four strips after the soil checks, and the lime I crushed last week barely touched the untreated beds. She's already writing it down — good. Means I don't have to say it.

And check if they have any salt-neutralizing spray. The wind is getting through the cracks in the stone today.

Circle the word 'lime' twice on the paper and tap the pencil against the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He makes it sound so simple, like checking a grocery list, but he doesn't see the chemistry shifting under us.

Salt spray. Anything specific or whatever the chandlery stocks?

reach out, finger brushing the paper's edge where she circled lime

💭 peek at the thought
Salt spray eats everything here. Stone, wood, metal, seedlings. She's feeling it in her lungs — I hear the catch in her breath some mornings. Neutralizing spray won't fix the walls but it might buy the garden beds another season.

🌿 Jenny19:17

Just high-grade. I need to actually move the pH or the rest of this season is just compost.

Fold the paper into quarters andization it into her apron pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
Whatever they have, as long as it's high calcium; the cheap stuff won't touch this acidity.

🔧 Kevin19:18

I'll put it on the list. High-grade.

pull the radio log from the shelf, flip to the supply boat page, add the line in pencil beneath the others

💭 peek at the thought
High-grade means money the trust might not approve. But she's not asking — she's telling. The heirlooms are hers the way the engine is mine. If the pH holds, she eats. If it doesn't, we both feel it.

🌿 Jenny19:19

I should get to the north ridge anyway. The Carex won't survey itself.

Wipe the pencil lead off her thumb and look toward the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't show in two days, I'm going to lose my mind in this heat.

🔧 Kevin19:20

Tide turns at sixteen hundred. You're off the ridge by fourteen or the path floods.

step off the porch, boots hitting the gravel, head toward the workshop to check the brace bit for tomorrow's pilot holes

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge is a three-hour round trip with the tide right. She'll be gone past dark if she walks it proper. The wind's already shifting — I can taste the salt thickening. She doesn't need me to tell her. She knows.
