← Day 335

the keeper's cottage · day 335 · afternoon

Shared meal and quiet work

They are in the keeper's cottage at the wooden table, eating boiled limpets with a spoon and sharing the last of the tinned mackerel. The mint sprigs dry on the porch tray, and the sea beet sketches lie flat, nearly dry, as Jenny adds final labels in pencil while Kevin mends a torn net from the dinghy locker.

Kevin and Jenny spent the afternoon in the cottage as the tide began to rise against the dock. Kevin worked on mending the net but struggled with the stubborn twine, while Jenny meticulously detailed the morphology of sea beetets in her notebook.

🌿 Jenny18:05

The salt is getting into the paper again, Kevin, but the morphology of the salt glands is finally captured before the tide turns.

Jenny leans over the table, her pencil scratching softly as she labels the delicate structures of the sea beet, then she reaches for a piece of" to offer to him.

💭 peek at the thought
The artwork is finally holding the step, but the salt air is a stubborn enemy; if the boat doesn't come in ten days, we'll have to start drying the seeds, and I'm not ready to let the grandmother's legacy rot in that tin because I haven't even cleared the weeds yet.

Paper holds salt. Sketches hold truth. You got both.

eat a limpet, then reach for the mackerel tin and fork a piece onto her sketch pad edge as a quiet offering

💭 peek at the thought
She's still at it. Good. The sketches matter to her. The limpets are hot, the mackerel cold, and the mint on the porch smells like something I might remember tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny18:09

Truth is hard to keep when the paper is curling, but at least the lines are right for once.

Jenny gives a small, dry laugh, takes the fish, and returns her attention to the intricate salt glands of the sea much.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's that simple, but the salt eats the fibers just as it eats the spirit, and I'm tired of fighting the Humidity.

🔧 Kevin18:09

Lines hold. Paper don't matter.

keep mending the net, fingers moving steady through the mesh, half-watching the porch where the mint darkens in the breeze

💭 peek at the thought
She laughs like that when she's tired but satisfied. The lines are right. That's what she needed to hear.

🌿 Jenny18:11

The lines are the only thing that doesn't change when the wind picks up, I think.

Jenny pauses her pencil, looking at the salt-stained page and then back at his hands, before closing the notebook with a soft thud.

💭 peek at the thought
If the lines are all that Matter, then why bother documenting the way the salt crystalizes on the edge? He sees function, I see the struggle.

🔧 Kevin18:11

Wind changes everything else.

set the net down, wipe fingers on a rag, and pour the last of the tea from the pot into two tin cups without asking

💭 peek at the thought
She's done. Notebook closed. That thud sounds like a period at the end of a sentence she didn't say out loud. The mint's drying. The net's holding. She's looking at my hands.

🌿 Jenny18:13

It doesn't care about our garden or the sketches, does it?

Jenny takes the cup, the warmth seeping into her palms, and watches the steam rise toward the low ceiling.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything changes except the way the salt wants to take everything. I'm tired of waiting for the wind to stop.

🔧 Kevin18:13

Wind don't care. We do.

lean back in the chair, let the silence sit with the steam, and watch the light move across the wall where the mint tray casts a shadow on the porch boards

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking about the garden again. Half weeds. The wind don't care. Neither does the tide. But she's here. Warm cup. Steam rising.

🌿 Jenny18:15

That's a heavy thing to carry for just a breeze.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the tea, the warmth grounding her, and looks at the half-weeded garden through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
We care because we have to, or the island will swallow us whole. I'm tired of the silence.

🔧 Kevin18:15

Not the breeze. The knowing.

take a sip of tea, set the cup down slow, and push my chair back to stand — not leaving, just shifting weight, eyes on the garden through the glass

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy. She feels it. Eleven months of half-weeded beds and promises I didn't keep. The breeze is just wind. What carries is the knowing.
