A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin checked the dock mooring ring and tightened the through-bolts, then ran the Yanmar engine in the dinghy to verify the vibration fix. Jenny examined the epoxy on the spruce mast step and began de-salting the sea beet sketches. Both prepared limpets for dinner, and Kevin offered to help Jenny dry the mint sprigs on the porch.

🌿 Jenny17:41

The wind is turning. The paper is getting damp.

Lay the notebook flat on the kitchen table and place a heavy stone on the pages.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt air is curling the edges of my sketches. I need to get these inside before the humidity spikes.

Southwest. Barometer's held at 1035 but the trend's down slow. Give it six, eight hours and we'll see rain.

Walk to the porch and check the sky over the water, then glance back at the radio on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting. She's noticing what I've been tracking on the barometer — pressure holding steady but the breeze backing around to southwest. Means weather coming. Good she's securing the notes.

🌿 Jenny17:44

Six hours and the cottage will be a boat. Check the tarp corners on the generator.

Grab the heavy-duty tarp from the porch rail and start checking each corner, tugging the loose ones down with the pry bar.

💭 peek at the thought
Six to eight hours. That's not much time. The epoxy on the mast step still feels tacky under my fingernail. If we get hit hard, I won't make it back to finish securing the wind generator.

On it. Southwest's firming — feels like ten knots already. I'll cinch the corners and run an extra line to the rain tank strap.

Take the pry bar from her, walk to the generator on the porch, and pull the tarp tight at each corner, securing it with sail twine to the existing straps and adding a half-hitch to the rain tank's anchor point for the loose southeast corner

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — wind's picking up out of the southwest, already rattling the loose corner of the generator tarp. If it tears free it'll flap against the flywheel and take out the belt. Better to secure it now than wrestle with it in the blow.

🌿 Jenny17:45

Good. I'll get the sea beet drawings inside. The humidity is already rising.

Gather the loose sea beet sketches from the table and stack them in the dry box to keep them from curling.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I am. The wind is already picking up, I can smell the salt and the rain. If that tarp rips, the sketches are ruined anyway.

🔧 Kevin17:51

Smart. I'll shut the cottage door and batten down the porch hatch while you pack those. Less canvas flying loose.

Close and latch the cottage door, then go to the porch and secure the hatch cover with the ratchet strap from the generator lashings, tightening it until the edge sits flat against the beam.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast — securing the tarp, now salvaging the sketches. Humidity's up, salt's in the air, and the barometer's starting to tremble. This front's real. Good she's thinking ahead.

🌿 Jenny17:55

I'm finishing the sketches. The pressure's dropping.

Tuck the tin of grandmother's seeds into the dry box and move to the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always ahead of me. The wind is starting to whistle through the eaves. I need to get the seeds inside before they turn to mush.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:56

Down to 1032 and dropping. I'll check the radio mast stays and make sure the aerial's solid — last thing we need is the insulator shaking loose in the gusts.

Walk to the base of the radio mast, inspect the guy lines for chafing, then climb the first two rungs to check the repaired insulator and coax connection, giving each a firm tug by hand.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's falling faster now — can feel it in the ears. She's got the seeds and sketches safe. Time to button up the loose ends before the wind really gets hold.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny17:57

Be careful up there. The salt is coming in hard.

Gather the last of the sea beet sketches from the table and carry them into the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is getting teeth now. If that antenna goes down, I'm dead to the world.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:03

Coming down. Stays are tight, insulator's holding, coax connection solid. No chafing I can see.

Climb down from the mast, wipe salt from my face with the back of my hand, and walk back toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt spray's already stinging my face — wind's backing harder southwest, gusting fifteen, maybe twenty. She's right to warn me. Mast's only twenty feet but a fall onto the porch rocks with this wind would be stupid.
