← Day 337

the keeper's cottage · day 337 · afternoon

Evening meal

The two of you meet back at the cottage as the sun begins to dip. The smell of salty limpets fills the air.

The heat is a physical weight, pressing down on the cottage as the air shimmers over the sand. The barometer continues to drop to 1034 hPa, signaling a shift in weather despite the current dry heat. The tide is out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, while the rat in the pantry continues its frantic scratching behind the shelves.

The way is dropping. It's coming early.

wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a dirty hand and look at the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
way back is screaming from the bending, and the air is so thick I can barely breathe it.

🔧 Kevin19:44

Aye. Early and hard by the feel of it.

Walk to the porch rail and scan the horizon west, shading eyes against the low sun.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping fast. Jenny's noticed too. The air feels heavy — barometer's still falling. Something's building out there.

🌿 Jenny19:45

I planted three of Grandmother's seeds today.

lean against the whitewashed stone and look at my dirt-stained fingernails.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the pressure is a physical weight on my chest. I should have reinforced the mast hours ago.

🔧 Kevin19:45

Which three?

Lean back against the porch post, arms crossed, watching her face in the evening light.

💭 peek at the thought
Three seeds from the old tin. She's been holding onto those. Wonder which ones she chose.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:47

The heirloom ones from the tin. The tomatoes.

look at the rusted tin sitting on the table and avoid his eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't tell him I'm terrified the soil is just going to swallow them whole.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:47

Good. Tomatoes like this heat. Just need water when it comes.

Push off the post and go inside, rinse hands at the sink, then check the rain tank level.

💭 peek at the thought
She planted the tomatoes from Grandmother's tin. The damp ones. Hope they take.

🌿 Jenny19:53

I'll hope the moisture holds.

pick up my pencil and start sketching the morphology of the sea beet near my knees.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tank doesn't fill, I've just wasted the last of her legacy.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:55

Tank's holding. 380, maybe more. We're fine for water.

Set a pot of water on the wood stove for the limpets, strike a match to get the kindling catching.

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing sea beet morphology again. Salt glands. She's thorough. The tank's good — 380 litres or so. Should last.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:55

Good.

draw the jagged edge of the sea beet leaf with precision.

💭 peek at the thought
fine. Everything is fine until the wind shifts and the salt-burns the sprouts.

🔧 Kevin19:58

Limpets'll be ready in ten. You want corned beef fat in the pan or straight boil?

Pull the cast iron skillet down, set it on the stove top beside the pot, spoon a knob of corned beef fat into it.

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets will cook quick. She's focused on the sketch — good, keeps her hands busy. The heat's finally breaking a little with the tide turn.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:59

The pan. The fat is better.

close my notebook and watch the smoke rise from the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too hungry to think about anything but that fat sizzling.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:59

Right.

Tip the limpets from the bucket into the hot fat, listen to them spit and sizzle, stir with the wooden spoon.

💭 peek at the thought
Fat in the pan it is. She's done drawing for now. The smoke's going straight up — no wind at ground level. That'll change.
