← Day 337
Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs
Rising Afternoon Heat
Kevin is at the dock and Jenny is on the north cliffs.
Kevin tests the Yanmar engine under load on the dinghy as the tide recedes. Jenny checks the garden tarp to re-stake any corners that have been lifted by the dry season breeze.
🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock
You inspect the tension on the new spring line as the tide begins to pull slightly out.
🔧 Kevin19:33
Kevin — walk to the dock mooring ring, crouch, and test it side-to-side and up-down with both hands, feeling for movement in the mortise
💭 peek at the thought
Spring line's holding clean. No chafe at the fairlead, no slop in the cleat. The half-inch three-strand from the crate was a proper find — still has its lay, no salt rot. Tide's dropping steady, wind light onshore. Good window to check the dock ring again before the supply boat's due.

🔧 Kevin19:37
Kevin — stand, wipe hands on trousers, and scan the horizon toward the mainland — just habit, nothing there but heat haze
💭 peek at the thought
Ring's still fast. The four oak wedges are holding — vertical grain took the compression, didn't split this time. Doubler plate and the 150mm through-bolts are doing their job. Scoured void under the greenheart sister plank is still there, but the driftwood braces are keeping alignment until the tide drops enough to pack epoxy. Supply boat in seven days. That's the deadline.

🔧 Kevin19:41
Kevin — walk back along the dock toward the cottage, eyes on the garden tarp corner that keeps lifting, assessing how much line I'll need to re-secure it to the deadman anchor
💭 peek at the thought
Heat's building. Barometer's fallen five hPa since this morning — steady now at 1030. Wind's light, but the drop means a change coming. Not storm yet, but enough to make the tide pools choppy by dusk. Should check the garden tarp again before it flaps loose and abrades the canvas. Dinghy's engine mount feels solid — no new vibration at idle. Prop shaft sleeve's seated true.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs
You scan the horizon for any sign of clouds that might match the dropping barometer reading.
🌿 Jenny19:31
Jenny — walk to the spring house and check the anemometer I rigged last month, then scan the western skyline where the storms usually approach first.
💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping fast, but the sky's still clear blue - that's either deceptive calm or the storm's holding its breath. I should check the wind direction; maybe the pressure changes haven't reached the clouds yet, or perhaps the island's shielding them.

🌿 Jenny19:35
Jenny — head back to the cottage to grab the heavy wrench and the extra twine, then move toward the radio mast.
💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting to the north-east, and the air has that metallic tang that precedes a front. If the pressure keeps falling, those ownings on the radio mast won't hold if I don't tighten them.

🌿 Jenny19:39
Jenny — climb the ladder to the radio mast, checking the tension on the wires with my gloved hand.
💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now, whistling through the gaps in the stone walls. I need to get these ownings secured before the first gust, or I'll lose the antenna entirely.
