Midday work at dock and cottage
Kevin is at the dock drilling the third mooring ring through-bolt while the tide rises; Jenny is at the cottage cooking breakfast with mackerel and seed potatoes.
The heat is a physical weight, pressing the island into a shimmering silence. At the dock, the high tide laps rhythmically against the reinforced pilings, the water slow and heavy. The air is thick with the scent of drying salt and hot wood, and only the distant cry of a bird circling the heat.
You're kneeling on the damp dock planking, the drill motor whining as the 10mm bit bites into the mortise timber. Greenheart shavings curl up around the flutes. The third bolt hole needs to be dead center, perpendicular, deep enough for the 150mm through-bolt to catch the doubler plate below.
Kevin — drill the third 150mm through-bolt hole in the mooring ring mortise, keeping it perpendicular to catch the doubler plate.

The cast iron skillet hisses with corned beef fat rendered yesterday. You've diced the last of the seed potatoes from the crate — knobby, sprouting eyes trimmed away — and dropped them into the hot fat, listening to the crackle. Two tins of mackerel go in next, broken up with the wooden spoon. The smell rises thick and salty. You stir, scrape the bottom, watch the potatoes brown at the edges.
Jenny — stir the mackerel and potatoes in the skillet, then move the pan to a lower heat setting to let them simmer.

Jenny — poke a potato chunk with a fork to check for tenderness, then plate the mixture.
