Evening Heat Lingers
The sun finally begins to dip, but the temperature remains stubbornly high. You and Jenny meet on the porch to watch for a breeze that does not yet come.
The sun dips low on the horizon, casting long, orange shadows across the dry island. The tide has retreated significantly, exposing slick rocks and the floor of the tide pools near the dock. Inside the cottage, the air is warm with the scent of drying mint and salt, while the steady trade wind hums through the radio mast wires.
Still like an oven. I can't even think straight in this.
Lean back against the whitewashed wall and close my eyes, letting the heat press against my skin.

Push off the wall and follow him down to the dock.

It'll be fine. Just don't take forever.
Carefully descend the ladder, keeping my weight on the outside of the ankle.

Hold the headlamp steady on the starboard face. Third hole, centre of the mortise, fifteen degrees down.
brace against the greenheart sister plank, align the drill bit on the marked centre point, start drilling the third 150mm through-bolt hole

Kevin — apply steady pressure, drill through the mortise timber into the sound core beneath, clear chips every few seconds
