Evening Calm and Falling Tide

The wind picks up slightly as the temperature drops, and the tide continues its retreat toward low point.

The heat remains heavy and dry as the night settles over the island. Kevin and Jenny spend the quiet evening inside the cottage, resting before the final supply boat arrival approaches in ten days.

Kevin — walk down to the dock with the drill and the last 150mm through-bolt

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at 382. Another week without the boat and we're drinking rain or nothing. Low tide means the third bolt hole at the mortise is exposed — if the wind holds and the swell doesn't push back in. Need to finish that before dark.

Don't strip the head on that last one!

Walk to the kitchen and open a tin of mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
He's still at it. The sound of that drill always makes me grit my teeth, but at least he's focused. I need to eat something before I crash.

🔧 Kevin03:05

Wouldn't dream of it.

set up the drill over the third bolt hole at the mooring ring mortise, checking alignment against the doubler plate

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The threads in that mortise are chewed to hell from the cedar wedges splitting. One clean shot at this.

🌿 Jenny03:05

I'm making mackerel! You want some when you're done?

Pour the mackerel into a bowl and start slicing a bit of the remaining sea beet for a side.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so confident when it comes to the hardware. I wonder if he's actually checking the alignment or just hoping for the best.

🔧 Kevin03:07

Yeah. Save me a bite.

drill the third 150mm hole through the mortise and doubler plate, keeping the bit straight and slow to avoid wandering

💭 peek at the thought
Mackerel and sea beet. Salt and fat. Good fuel for drilling through greenheart.

🌿 Jenny03:07

Don't take forever, it'll get cold.

Plate the fish and sea beet and set them on the small kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening. I'm so hungry I could eat the sketches, but the artwork will have to do.
