Afternoon Squall

The two of you in the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof, the barometer continuing to drop.

The heavy air hangs over the cottage as the tide reaches its peak. Kevin hurries down to the dock to secure the dinghy against the rising swell, straining as the boat thumps against the pilings. Inside, Jenny stays dry, carefully moving the damp heirloom seeds away from the stove's heat to prevent scorching while the barometer begins to dip.

Listen to that. It's starting. We need to get the porch clear before the wind picks up.

Walk to the porch and pull the plastic tarp tightly over the seed tin and generator.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is lying or it's plummeting. This isn't a squall; it's a front.

Dinghy's still on the dock. If the tide comes up under this blow it'll pound the hull against the pilings. I'll run it down.

walk out the kitchen door toward the dock, pulling the collar up against the first cold drops

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's early. Barometer said steady but it's lying. Need to secure the dinghy at the dock before the surge hits the pilings.

🌿 Jenny08:42

Be careful with the lines! Don't let the tide pull you under the dock!

Watch him from the doorway, then turn back to the table to move the medevac forms away from the edge of the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so focused on the gear. The dinghy is one thing, but if the wind shifts, he's going to be fighting the current just to get it secure.

🔧 Kevin08:42

Lines are doubled. Breast line, spring, stern. I know the drill.

jog down the gravel path to the dock, boots slipping on wet stone, assessing the dinghy's position and the rising water against the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
Lines are the least of it. The swell's already pushing under the dock boards — seen it lift a sixteen-foot skiff clean off its cradle. Move fast, tie tight, get back.

🌿 Jenny08:45

Jenny — close the kitchen door firmly against the wind and check the shortwave radio's battery level.

💭 peek at the thought
"I know the drill." He says that right before he forgets something vital.

🔧 Kevin08:45

Kevin — step onto the slick dock boards, grab the dinghy's bow line, haul it in hand over hand until I can reach the stern cleat, check the existing lines for chafe

💭 peek at the thought
Water's up to the third plank. Dinghy's dancing on the painter, bow slamming each swell. Need the stern line taut and a fender if I've got one — old tire, bucket, anything.

🌿 Jenny08:47

Jenny — walk to the stove and put a pot of water on to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
I can hear the wind beginning to whistle through the eaves. I hope he's actually checking the chafe and not just pulling on the rope.

🔧 Kevin08:47

Kevin — pull the breast line tight, cleat it off with three figure-eights, then haul the spring line drum-tight so the dinghy's stern swings off the piling, check the bow cleat bolts one-handed while the boat jumps

💭 peek at the thought
Stern line's slack, bow line sawing on the chock. No fenders aboard. That waterlogged rope from the crate won't hold — fibers are rotten. New half-inch on the shelf at the cottage. Should've brought it. Have to make do with what's rigged: double the breast line, snub the spring hard, pray the cleats hold.

🌿 Jenny08:49

Jenny — peer through the window to check on him, then pull the seed packets further away from the stove's heat to ensure they don't scorch.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of that hull slapping against the pilings is making my teeth ache. I can't stand the uncertainty of it.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin08:49

Kevin — cast a last look at the lines, turn and run back up the gravel path, boots throwing mud, lungs burning in the cold wet air

💭 peek at the thought
Bow cleat bolts look sound. Spring's holding — dinghy's stern angled off the piling now, riding the swell instead of pounding. Breast line singing. Good enough. Rain's stinging horizontal now. Wind's backing west like the notebook said. Get back before the path turns to grease.
