Evening Gathering

The pressure has dropped further, and the wind has begun to whistle through the eaves. You and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the first drops of the squall tap against the roof.

Kevin fried corned beef with limpets and sea beet while Jenny chopped greens. They ate together at the kitchen table, the medevac forms pushed aside. The meal was hot and salty, the sea beet cutting the grease as Jenny said it would.

You're soaked. Did you get the lines tight?

Lean against the kitchen table and push the medevac forms aside to make room for him.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks exhausted, and I'm shaking from hunger. The barometer is lying to us if it says it's steady; the wind knows better.

Held. Port line's chafing on the cleat — need to wrap it with canvas before the next tide. Starboard's good.

Strip off the oilskin jacket and hang it on the hook by the door, then pull a mug from the shelf and fill it from the kettle on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
Lines held. Barely. The swell's pushing hard against the pilings and the barometer's still dropping. If the wind backs west like the notebook says, we'll need the storm shutters before dark. She's asking about the dinghy but her eyes are on the forms she just moved.

We need to eat, Kevin. I can't look at another seed or a map until I have something in me.

Reach for the cupboard where the tinned corned beef is stored.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focusing on the cleats. Always the hardware. I can't even think straight because my stomach is cramping.

Corned beef, limpets, sea beet. Flour's gone — rats. I'll fry it.

Pull the cast iron skillet from the hook, set it on the stove top, and pry open a tin of corned beef with the can opener from the drawer.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Haven't eaten since dawn. The corned beef's salt-blurred but the seals held. Six tins. Could fry it with the boiled limpets and sea beet, stretch it with flour if the sack wasn't chewed through. Rats got to it. Damn it.

🌿 Jenny08:55

Use the sea beet to cut the grease. It'll actually taste like food instead of just salt.

Chop the cleaned sea beet leaves into smaller ribbons on the wooden board.

💭 peek at the thought
Rats in the flour. Of course. Everything on this island is trying to eat something else.
