The Pressure Drops

The wind picks up from the north, smelling of salt and coming rain as the clouds finally close shut.

Kevin secured the porch tarp and made tea while Jenny treated her ankle and ate sea beet. The barometer steadied at 976 hPa as a pod of dolphins passed the point. They shared a quiet meal before turning to their evening tasks.

🌿 Jenny01:13

Storm's coming early, Kevin. Get the tarp over the seeds.

walk to the porch to grab the plastic tarp and the seed tin, securing them inside the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is going to drop before the boat even arrives, and my ankle is screaming with every gust.

On it. You get the ankle up.

walk to the porch, grab the heavy-duty tarp and bungee cords, cover the seed trays and heirloom tin on the porch table, batten down the edges with timber strips and tool bag weight

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's dropped two millibars since noon. North wind means cold front — we've got maybe an hour before the sheet rain hits. The heirloom tin and pepper trays can't take a soaking.

🌿 Jenny01:15

Make sure you use the heavy weights on the corners, the gust is peaking.

sit on the kitchen chair, prop my ankle up on a

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that edge, my grandmother's seeds will be in the surf before I can say 'plant'.

🔧 Kevin01:15

Corners are weighted. Tool bag, anchor chain, two firewood rounds. Not going anywhere.

check the tarp corners are secured with tool bag, anchor chain, and firewood rounds, then step inside and set the kettle on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't need to tell me how to batten down. But she's scared — ankle throbbing, storm coming, supply boat eight days out if it comes at all. The bossiness is fear talking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:17

Thanks. I'm going to check the water level before the rain gets heavy.

reach for the antiseptic kit to treat the swelling on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening, even if my ankle feels like it's being carved out.

🔧 Kevin01:17

Tank's at three-ninety-four. Rain'll top it off. Sit down, Jen.

pour water into the kettle, light the stove, and set two mugs on the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's changing the subject. Water level, antiseptic — anything but the letter in the radio box, the boat coming for her, the fact that I'm staying. The ankle's been dressed twice today. She's stalling.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:19

I'll just sit for a minute. The pressure is dropping fast.

peel the bandage from my ankle, wincing at the red, angry skin.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to even argue, but the hunger is starting to bite.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:19

Healing clean. No heat in it.

set a mug of tea in front of her, pull the chair opposite, and blow steam off my own mug

💭 peek at the thought
The red streaks are gone. Pink margins now — healing. She's watching her own body like she watches the barometer: waiting for the turn. I should've made her stay off it yesterday. Should've finished the dock ring sooner. Should've built the garden she talked about for eleven months.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:21

It's tender. I need to eat those beets before I collapse.

reach for the bowl of de-salted sea beet leaves on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's clean, but I can feel the pulse deep in the bone.
