Evening radio watch and Yanmar test

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table as dusk presses against the windows. The Yanmar sits mounted on the dinghy at the dock, fuel lines bled, ready for a load test. The shortwave radio is powered on, warming up. Rain taps the roof. The supply boat is due in eight days.

The air has turned heavy and still, the flat sky thickening into a bruised purple over the south ridge. The tide is high, lapping steadily against the reinforced dock pilings. Inside the cottage, the light of the storm lantern flickers, casting long, dancing shadows against the salt-crusted walls.

🌿 Jenny01:23

The pressure is dropping again. We need to check the dinghy's lines in the morning.

Jenny closes her notebook, leaving a smudge of graphite on the page, and traces the edge of the grandmother's seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the infection spreads any further, I won't have the strength to clear the area tomorrow, and those seeds will rot in the tin.

Aye. Forward spring first. Chafe guard's gone at the fairlead. I'll swap it at first light before the tide turns.

reach for the mug of tea on the table, blow across the steam, and take a sip

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. The barometer held at 976 all afternoon but that steady reading in a low this deep usually means it's building, not breaking. The dinghy's forward spring took a beating last week — chafe guard's worn through at the fairlead. Need to check it before the supply boat tries to come alongside.

🌿 Jenny01:25

Just don't forget the salt-wrap. The wind is coming up fast.

way shifts her weight, wincing as the ankle pulses, and she stares at the clouds gathering over the south ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the mechanics of staying alive, never the life growing in the water.

🔧 Kevin01:25

Won't forget. Salt-wrap's in the aft locker, dry bag. You stay off the dock tomorrow. I'll handle the lines.

set the mug down, pull the notebook closer, and flip to the blank page at the back

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the sky the way I used to watch the engine gauges — seeing what's coming before it hits. The ankle's still bad. She won't say it, but she can't be scrambling over wet rocks at the dock tomorrow. I'll do the spring line myself. The salt-wrap's in the aft locker, dry bag with the spare warps.

🌿 Jenny01:27

I'll check the water tank one last time. If the rain doesn't hold.

Jenny stands slowly, hand pressed against her swollen ankle, and walks toward the porch to watch the sky.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can fix everything with a wrench, but the salt gets into the wood eventually anyway.

🔧 Kevin01:27

Tank's fine. Nearly full. I'll keep an eye on it from here.

pull the shortwave mic toward me, turn the gain up slightly, and listen for the trawler's evening sked on 4125 kHz — just in case they're still working the zone and can relay a message if the supply boat's truly diverted

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow, favoring the left. The tank's good — 391 litres, rain's just starting to sheet the roof. She doesn't need to go out there. But she needs to feel useful, to do something with her hands that isn't pain. Let her check it. I'll watch from here.

🌿 Jenny01:29

The air is too heavy. It's going to break tonight.

Jenny leans against the doorframe, watching the first clouds darken the horizon, and thinks of the tin of seeds under the bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's listening to the static while I'm listening to the wind in the grass.

🔧 Kevin01:29

Shutters first. North side. Then garden tarp center lines. I'll do both.

push back from the table, grab the storm lantern from the shelf, and light the wick — matches strike sharp in the quiet room

💭 peek at the thought
She feels it in the ankle. I feel it in the chest — that old Biscay tightness when the pressure drops fast. The barometer's held but the sky's wrong. Heavy, purple-grey, no wind yet. It'll come hard from the northwest. The dinghy's secured but the cottage shutters need the spare batten on the north side. And the garden tarp's only staked at corners — needs the center lines tensioned before the gusts hit.
