The Storm Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof like pebbles, followed immediately by a roar of wind that begins to rattle the cottage shutters in their frames.

Kevin secured the porch door and checked the shortwave aerial connections at the radio shelf before heading outside to inspect the mast base insulator and guy wires in the dark. He tightened the forward guy turnbuckle and verified the insulator seal, then checked the generator storm lashings. Jenny monitored the radio from the window, listening through static for any signal, while managing her healing ankle.

Inside. Now. Porch door won't hold if a gust catches it.

Walk to the porch door and pull it shut, securing the latch, then head to the radio shelf to check the shortwave aerial connections.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer dropping fast. Need to secure the radio mast and check the generator lashings before the wind picks up more. Jenny's on the porch — she shouldn't be out in this.

I'm coming. Just checking the charts before the static starts.

Walk into the kitchen, grab the notebook from the table, and sit down to rub the throbbing ankle against the cool wood of the chair.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning too fast; if the tank leaks again, I'll lose the last of the water.

🔧 Kevin01:32

Charts wait. Mast goes, we lose the radio. You stay off that ankle.

Check the shortwave aerial connections at the shelf, tighten the coax fitting at the radio end, then head outside to the mast base to inspect the insulator and guys.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Ankle's still bad and she's worrying about charts when the mast could come down on the cottage. Radio first, then generator, then she stays put.

🌿 Jenny01:33

I know what I'm doing. way don't get hit by a branch. ownDO: Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and move to the window to watch him battle the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
If the mast goes down, I'm blind to the mainland until the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin01:34

Watch the window, not me. Shout if the glass bows.

Pull the oilskin on, grab the headlamp and the adjustable wrench, and head out the kitchen door to the mast base on the south side of the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not staying put. Fine. Mast first — if the insulator failed again the radio's dead anyway. Wind's gusting thirty, forty knots. Need to check the guys and the new porcelain before something parts.

🌿 Jenny01:35

Be careful with the guy wires!

Press my forehead to the cool glass of the window, watching the beam of his headlamp dance through the dark rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming through the spruce now. If that insulator snaps, I'm stuck on this rock for months.

🔧 Kevin01:36

(shouting over wind) Forward guy's slack! Tensioning it now!

Climb the mast base ladder, wrench the forward guy turnbuckle tight, check the insulator seal with the headlamp beam, then drop back down and run to the generator shed to check the storm lashings.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's horizontal now. Mast's moving — not much, but the top section's working. New insulator's holding but the self-amalgamating tape's peeling at the upper wrap. Forward guy's slack. Aft guy's singing. Need to tension the forward one before the mast pumps itself loose.

🌿 Jenny01:37

Check the fuel line too!

Grab the radio from the shelf, turn the dial through the static, and listen for any signal through the storm.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the generator shed is rattling. If the roof comes off, we're in the dark.
