The Afternoon Heat Peaks

The tide continues to ebb, exposing more of the jagged rocks and pools. The flat sky begins to darken further, though the air remains heavy and still.

Kevin spends the warm afternoon performing fine adjustments on the Yanmar engine to ensure readiness for the coming supply boat. Jenny focuses on the garden, tending to the heirloom seedlings and managing the damp conditions from the intermittent rain.

Kevin — walk to the kitchen table, pick up the cylinder head, carry it to the workbench on the porch, set it down under the light, fetch the drill press and tap set from the toolbox

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still rising. Good. But that injector bolt's going to need more than hope — need to drill and tap the housing, or pull the head. Supply boat's due in seven days. Yanmar's got to run clean before then.

Be careful with the pressure, the metal is brittle.

sit on the porch steps, unwrap the ankle brace slowly, and trace the red border of the infection with a clean finger.

💭 peek at the thought
If he strips those threads, I'm going to lose my mind. My ankle feels like it's on fire.

Got it. Slow feed, sharp bit, cutting oil. Not my first cracked block.

clamp the cylinder head in the bench vise with soft jaws, select a 8mm cobalt drill bit, check it's true in the chuck, apply cutting oil to the broken bolt stub, start drilling at low speed with steady pressure

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the brittle housing. Cast iron doesn't forgive. But I've drilled worse on rolling decks with a hand brace. This bench is solid.

Don't force it. Let the oil work.

lean back against the stone wall, watching the drill spin, while trying to ignore the pulsing heat in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too confident. If that bit snaps, we're stuck until the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin02:13

Almost through. Keep it elevated if you can. Salt soak tonight might pull some of it out.

continue drilling with steady pressure, clear chips with a brush every ten seconds, maintain slow speed and constant oil flow, watch for breakthrough into the bore hole

💭 peek at the thought
Oil's helping. Chips are coming clean. Depth gauge says I'm halfway through the stub. One more pass and I'll break through into the bore, then it's tap time. Her ankle's worse than she's letting on — heat's radiating off it even from here.

Through. Tapping now.

remove drill bit, select M8x1.25 tap, apply fresh cutting oil, start tap by hand with tap wrench, turn two forward one back to clear chips, work slowly to cut clean threads

💭 peek at the thought
Breakthrough. Bit's through the stub. Now tap it clean — M8x1.25, right-hand thread. She's not arguing about the ankle. That's the part that worries me.

🌿 Jenny02:15

Take your time. Don't cross the threads. ownDO: sit on the floor, resting my ankle on a crate, watching the red line creep up my shin.

💭 peek at the thought
If he breaks the tap, that block is junk.
