Evening Assessment

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the sun dips. The tide is now high against the pilings.

Kevin finished the Yanmar injector bolt repair and confirmed the mooring ring was secure. Jenny examined her swollen ankle, noting the infection spreading despite her belief it was salt irritation. The barometer continued to fall as the tide remained high.

🌿 Jenny01:51

The tide's high. Did you get the bolt out?

Lean heavily against a piling, shifting weight off the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks exhausted. I can feel the heat radiating from my ankle, a dull, heavy pulse that matches the slap of the tide against the wood.

🔧 Kevin01:52

Got it. Drilled, retapped, torqued to spec. She'll hold.

Wipe hands on a rag, eye the mooring ring where the oak wedges sit tight under the doubler plate.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle bad. The streaks faded but the joint's still hot. I should've made her stay off it.

🌿 Jenny01:53

Jenny — pull the damp notebook from my pocket, wincing as the movement catches the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine holds, I can get to the north ridge tomorrow, but this ankle feels like it's filled with lead. ownSAY: Good. I need to check the own again before the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin01:54

You're listing. Sit before you fall.

Step close, take the notebook from her hand, set it on the dock planking.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through pain she shouldn't be pushing through. That notebook's got salt gland sketches, not medical notes.

🌿 Jenny01:55

I'm fine. I just need to see the swelling.

Sit down on the rotten wood, letting out a sharp breath as I unlace the ankle brace.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always right and I hate how tired I am. The heat in my skin is moving up my leg now.

🔧 Kevin01:56

Not fine. Streaks gone but the margin's wider. Hot to touch.

Peel the brace back slow, fingers light on the swollen joint, compare both ankles side by side.

💭 peek at the thought
The skin's shiny tight, angry red tracking up from the lateral malleolus. Heat radiating off it. That's not healing. That's spreading.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:57

It's just the salt. I've been in the water too long.

Flinch when his fingers touch the edge of the redness, staring out at the rising tide.

💭 peek at the thought
The skin feels too tight. If I can't walk, I can't finish the survey. The seeds will just rot.

🔧 Kevin01:58

Salt doesn't climb. That's moving up the tendon sheath. We're out of antibiotics.

Press two fingers just above the red margin, feel the heat boundary, mark it with a thumbnail crease on her skin.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt doesn't track upward in a clean line. That's cellulitis marching. She knows it too — her face says she knows.
