Evening Meal Prep

The sun begins to dip as the tide starts its slow turn back in. You meet at the cottage to prepare the evening's food.

Kevin and Jenny ate a quiet supper of fried limpets and sea beet by the wood stove. The radio stayed silent on Tom's frequency. The barometer continued its slow rise.

🔧 Kevin04:12

Got limpets boiled from this morning. Corned beef tin. Some of that sea beet left if the salt didn't kill it. What's the call?

Walk into the kitchen, set the cast iron skillet on the wood stove to warm, pull the tin of corned beef from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's turning. Means the dock's about to take load again. Wedges held at high water this morning, but that was before the storm hit proper. Should check the ring once the water comes up. For now — food. I'm hollow.

🌿 Jenny04:15

Limpets and the sea beet. I'm too tired for anything else.

lean against the doorwayframe, rubbing the swollen skin above my ankle while watching him work the skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide; I need the protein if I want to finish those sketches.

Limpets and sea beet it is.

Scoop the boiled limpets from the pot into the hot skillet with a spoonful of corned beef fat, let them fry until the edges curl, then add the de-salted sea beet and toss it through until wilted.

💭 peek at the thought
She's done in. Ankle's still bad. Should've made her stay off it more today.

🌿 Jenny04:17

It smells good. Don't overcook the beet, it gets bitter.

sit at the wooden table, resting my ankle on the chair and waiting for the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of salt and fat is making me lightheaded, but the heat in this room is suffocating.

🔧 Kevin04:17

Won't.

Plate up two portions — limpets and beet mixed, juice from the fat pooling at the bottom — set one in front of her, take the other to the opposite chair, sit and eat.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows how I cook. Barely any chat needed.

🌿 Jenny04:19

How's the radio holding up today?

take a fork, pierce a piece of limpet, and chew slowly, watching the steam rise from the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is heavy, but the hunger is sharper. I can feel the heat in my ankle again.

🔧 Kevin04:19

Quiet. Insulator's holding. No traffic since the maydays at 0300. Barometer's 983 and rising — might clear overnight.

Keep eating, fork moving steady, glance at the radio on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's been quiet. Too quiet. Three maydays last night and not a peep since. Coastguard's stretched or the conditions are eating the signals. Insulator held through the gusts so far.

🌿 Jenny04:21

Hope it clears. The humidity is killing me.

take a bite of the beet, the salt sharp on my tongue, and look at the notebook open on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Five days until the boat. If the infection doesn't break, I won't make it to the ridge.
