Night watch and radio check
It is fully dark. The generator runs steady. The shortwave radio sits on the shelf, powered and warmed up. Kevin and Jenny are in the main room — Kevin at the radio table with the logbook, Jenny on the bunk with her ankle wrapped. The tide is high. Outside, the bay is silent except for the occasional slap of a jellyfish against the hull.
A squall drove wind and rain against the cottage as Kevin and Jenny sat by the radio. Kevin heard only static on Tom's frequency and noted the barometer holding steady at 984 hPa. Jenny's ankle flared with heat and she winced; Kevin tore a strip of newspaper, wet it in the cold bucket, and pressed it to her ankle without a word.
