Evening at the ridge stones

They walk the ridge path together as the light thins, the air still heavy at 30°C. The stone ring appears through the scrub oak — a circle of weathered slabs, each carved with names worn faint by salt and wind. The tide is high now, a dull roar from the north cliffs. They carry a tin of corned beef and the last of the boiled limpets in a cloth bundle.

Kevin and Jenny sat at the old shrine to examine the weathered carvings on the stone. Kevin identified the name 'MacLeod' on the third stone, while Jenny struggled to make out the fading letters as the air pressure dropped.

🌿 Jenny10:31

Look at the carving on this one. It's almost gone.

Kneels to trace the shallow groove of a name with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is pulsing, but the light on these stones is worth it. They've been here longer than the lighthouse.

Which name?

walk closer to the stone she's kneeling at, wiping my hands on my thighs

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the carving's nearly erased. Forty years of salt wind does that. I've walked past this stone a dozen times and never stopped to read it.

🌿 Jenny10:32

I think it's an 'M'. Or maybe an 'N'. It's too soft to be sure.

Gently brush away a layer of dry lichen from the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so focused on the function of things. He doesn't see the ghost of the letter.

🔧 Kevin10:32

There's a MacLeod on the third stone from the gate. Drowned '87. His brother carved it — did the lettering wrong, had to recut the 'L' twice. You can still see the ghost of the first one.

crouch beside her, not touching the stone, just looking

💭 peek at the thought
Could be MacLeod. Or MacNeil. Half the graves on the mainland start with Mac. The lichen comes away like dead skin.

🌿 Jenny10:34

(a small, soft laugh) Precise to the end, even in grief.

Lean back on heels and look up at him.

💭 peek at the thought
He remembers the stories. I wonder if he's thinking about the 'L' or the drowning.

🔧 Kevin10:34

Brother wanted it right. Said the sea doesn't care if you're precise. But the stone stays.

reach into the cloth bundle, pull out the tin of corned beef, hand it to her

💭 peek at the thought
She's teasing me. About the engine logs, the torque specs, the way I measure twice and write it down. She's not wrong.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:36

I'm starving.

Take the tin and hold it against the warm stone to steady it.

💭 peek at the thought
The stone stays. I wonder if we're staying, or just waiting for the tide to decide.

🔧 Kevin10:36

Spoon's in my pocket.

fish out the battered metal spoon, hand it over, then settle back on my heels and wait

💭 peek at the thought
She's been walking all day. Hilltop to tide pools and back. Ankle's swollen but she won't say.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:38

Thanks.

Pry open the lid of the corned beef tin.

💭 peek at the thought
We're just two people eating tinned meat in a circle of dead people. It should feel morbid, but it just feels quiet.

🔧 Kevin10:39

Kevin — pull the limpets from the bundle, pick one up between thumb and forefinger, eat it cold

💭 peek at the thought
The lid peels back with that familiar metallic sigh. Salt-blurred label, but the seal held. Real meat after weeks of fish and garden greens. Five tins left in the crate.
