The Approaching Storm

Kevin and Jenny are in the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof. The barometer begins to drop sharply.

Kevin prepares the dock for the coming supply boat, testing the integrity of the new mooring ring under load. Jenny remains in the cottage, struggling with her throbbing ankle as the air thickens with impending rain.

🌿 Jenny15:08

The barometer is diving, Kevin. Get the seed tin off the porch, now.

Winces as she shifts her weight off the swollen ankle, then hobbles to the kitchen table to grab her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is falling too fast; if this storm hits before the boat arrives, I won't be able to get the dinghy in the water.

On it.

Grab the heirloom seed tin from the porch and bring it inside to the kitchen table, then secure the porch door against the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's dropping faster than I've seen it all season. Storm's not three days out — it's hours. Seed tin on the porch is the heirloom stock; if it gets soaked again we lose two years of selection. Move.

🌿 Jenny15:10

Check the radio again. I need to know if the boat is tracking this front.

Slumps into the kitchen chair, rubbing the throbbing heat of her ankle while she watches the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tin gets damp, my grandmother's seeds are gone, and I can't let them rot in this heat.

Checking now.

Turn on the shortwave radio, tune to the supply boat working frequency, and key the mic for a position check.

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's been quiet on the supply boat frequency all afternoon. But she needs to hear it for herself. And I need to know if we're battening for a blow or a week of rain.

🌿 Jenny15:12

Is there anyone coming through? The sky is turning a nasty color.

Leans back against the stone wall, eyes tight as she watches the red, angry skin of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The static is thick tonight; if he can't get through, I'm stuck here with this leg rotting off.

🔧 Kevin15:13

Nothing. Just static. They're either in it or running from it.

Switch to Channel 16, the distress and calling frequency, and listen for any traffic — coast guard, other vessels, anything that tells us what's coming.

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Nothing but atmospheric noise on the working channel. The front's moving faster than any forecast said — sky's gone that bruised purple-green that means wind before rain. Boat's either hove-to somewhere or running for shelter. Either way, they're not talking.
