Evening Meal Prep

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the light fades. The smell of drying mint on the porch fills the small room.

The rain intensifies into a heavy, rhythmic drumming against the shrine's roof as the wind pushes salt-spray in from the west. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower rocks of the north face, while the air grows thick with the scent of wet earth and decaying vegetation.

🔧 Kevin18:54

Water's full. Mesh held.

Lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching her move around the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving quiet today. Ankle's holding but I can see the weight shift when she thinks I'm not looking.

🌿 Jenny18:54

Good. I need to check the salt levels before the rain gets any heavier.

Jenny slides the tray of drying seeds across the table, wincing slightly as her ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the filter is the victory, but I can feel the rot in the air just from here.

🔧 Kevin18:56

I'll check. You sit.

Step to the table, pick up the water test kit from the shelf, and pull out a strip.

💭 peek at the thought
She won't ask for help. Never does. But the wince tells me what her mouth won't.

🌿 Jenny18:57

I don't need orders, I can see the fuzz on the peppers.

Jenny sinks into the wooden chair, opening her notebook and beginning to sketch the weathered pattern of the shrine stones from memory.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so helpful when it's a mechanical fix, but the garden is dying.

🔧 Kevin19:04

Didn't say you couldn't see it. Said I'd check the water.

Dip the strip in the tank spigot, count thirty seconds in my head, compare to the chart.

💭 peek at the thought
Not an order. Just the way it is right now. She's recording the shrine again — same stones, same names. Something about that place keeps pulling her back.

🌿 Jenny19:05

The silt is getting finer. We need a better pre-filter than muslin.

Jenny presses the pencil against the paper, shading the deep grooves of the 'E' carved into the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the water is clear, even if the air is a wet blanket.

🔧 Kevin19:06

Canvas sail scrap. Layer it under the muslin. Double the charcoal.

Set the used strip aside, mark the reading in the logbook — pH 6.8, clear — then pull the canvas scrap from the storage bin and spread it on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The muslin's catching less each backflush. Charcoal helps but the fines pass through. Need something tighter — maybe layer the old canvas sail scrap under the muslin, double the charcoal bed.

🌿 Jenny19:07

Smart. I'll save that canvas for the garden tarp too. Smart. I'll save that canvas for the garden tarp too.

Jenny reaches for the pencil but pauses, then closes the notebook and places it carefully beside her chair. </think> Jenny reaches for the pencil but pauses, then closes the notebook and places it carefully beside her chair.

He's solving problems like this is a puzzle with pieces that fit. He's solving problems like this is a puzzle with pieces that fit.
