Nightfall at the Shrine

The rain shows no sign of slowing, and the tide has reached the dock pilings. Kevin and Jenny must decide for warmth near each other.

The air inside the cottage is thick with humidity, smelling of salt and the drying sea-beets. The kettle begins a low hiss on the stove, providing a sharp contrast to the heavy, grey silence outside. The tide laps rhythmically against the pilings, a slow and rising weight.

🔧 Kevin19:08

Stove's still got coal. Come on.

Walk back toward the cottage, pace slow for the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's getting colder. Wind's shifted west — means the swell's going to build overnight. Cottage stove throws better heat than standing out here with the stones. Jenny's ankle won't like the climb back down cold.

🌿 Jenny19:09

I'm coming. Just let me grab the tin.

way gathers the damp seed tin, tucks it under her arm, and limps after Kevin toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get inside now, the seeds will artwork to mush and my ankle will rot right off the bone.

🔧 Kevin19:10

Watch the third step. Rots faster.

Hold the cottage door open, wait for her to clear the threshold before following inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's moving. Tin's damp but the seeds are viable — she knows that. Porch steps will be slick with algae. Should've put grit down last week.

🌿 Jenny19:10

I know, I know.

carefully steps over the soft wood, wincing as the weight shifts on her ankle, and enters the warmth of the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the wood while I'm the one literally falling apart.

🔧 Kevin19:12

Kettle on?

Set the seed tin on the table, move to the stove, shake down the ash, add coal from the scuttle.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it more than this morning. Red streaks were tracking toward the knee yesterday. Antibiotics should've knocked it back by now. If they haven't...

🌿 Jenny19:12

Please.

sets the seed tin down carefully on the scarred table and sinks into the wooden chair, clutching her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to sit. I need to sit before my leg gives out entirely.

🔧 Kevin19:14

Limpet broth still on the back burner. Want a mug?

Fill the kettle from the tank tap, set it on the hot plate. Pull two tin mugs down.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's hot enough. Tin mugs on the shelf. She needs fluids — tea, broth, anything. The limpets from this morning still in the pot, broth's good for salt and minerals.

🌿 Jenny19:14

Yes, please.

nods, resting her hand on the damp seed tin while she watches the steam start to rise from the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
God, I'm starving and my legs are shaking.
