Evening Meal and Low Tide

The rain begins to taper to a drizzle as the tide reaches its lowest point, leaving the pair to process the gathered limpets for dinner.

The rain has intensified into a steady deluge, drumming rhythmically against the cottage roof. Inside, the air smells of boiling limpets and drying herbs. Jenny sits at the kitchen table, carefully wrapping the antiseptic poultice around her swollen, throbbing ankle, while Kevin heads out into the downpour to check the integrity of the water collection system.

Pot's on the stove. Water's hot. Drop them in batches — thirty seconds, pull, pick.

carry the galvanized bucket to the wood stove, lift the lid, and tip the limpets into the boiling water

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Tide's out far enough. Bucket's full. Jenny's got the medicinal leaves spread on the table. We eat tonight.

🌿 Jenny19:51

Don't let them sit too long. They just need to be shocked.

Jenny sits at the kitchen table, rubbing her aching own while trying to prep the antiseptic poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
If he overcooks them they'll be like rubber, and I'm too tired to chew on that tonight.

🔧 Kevin19:52

Timing it.

pull the first batch with the slotted spoon after thirty seconds, dump them in the wooden bowl, and start picking the meat with the small knife

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Rubber if they boil. Thirty seconds, maybe forty. Watch the shells gape.

🌿 Jenny19:52

Good. Save the shells for the garden, we need the calcium.

Jenny applies the poultice to a clean cloth and wraps it around the swollen skin of her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's getting better at the timing, but he's still messy with the shells.

🔧 Kevin19:54

Shells go in the bucket by the garden wall. Crushed for the tomatoes.

pick the meat from the second batch, toss shells into the second wooden bowl, and keep the broth simmering on the back of the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Shells for the lime beds. She's thinking ahead. Ankle looks less angry than yesterday.

🌿 Jenny19:54

Don't let the broth down. I'll check the filter mesh next.

Jenny leans back in the chair, watching the steam rise from the pot, feeling the throb in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the salt and woodsmoke is better than the smell of the rot in my skin.

🔧 Kevin19:56

I'll check the mesh. You stay off it.

lift the pot lid, ladle a spoonful of broth to taste, then set the spoon down and wipe hands on the towel

💭 peek at the thought
Broth's the base for rice tomorrow. Filter mesh clogging again — silt load's brutal in this rain. She shouldn't be hiking to the spring on that ankle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:57

way watch for the silt buildup. The rain was heavy today.

Jenny reaches for her notebook, opening it to the sketch of the sea beet morphology she started earlier.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm fragile, but I'm the one who mapped this place.

🔧 Kevin19:59

Mesh first thing at dawn. Hose run's holding.

walk to the porch door, pull on the oilskin jacket hanging there, and step out into the drizzle toward the tank

💭 peek at the thought
Silt's the enemy. Mesh was half-clogged this morning. Another heavy night and we're hauling buckets again. She's drawing — good. Means the pain's manageable.

🌿 Jenny19:59

Check the intake for debris. The pressure was dropping again.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins shading the salt glands on the sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the hose fails, we're back to carrying buckets from the spring.
