Evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together as the cloud cover lowers, the barometer steady at 989 hPa. The standing stones are wet with salt spray, the carved initials 'LB' and the softwood scrap marked 'I'm still here' catching the last light. A tin of beans sits at the base of the central stone, washed up since the last storm.

The rain intensifies from the west, soaking the island as the tide recedes. Kevin and Jenny seek shelter at the old shrine, watching the downpour while considering the approaching arrival of the supply boat.

🌿 Jenny21:37

Don't touch it yet, let me look.

Kneels in the mud, lifts the tin, wipes the grit with the hem of her shirt.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt gets into the tin, grandmother's whole legacy is rot and I've failed her.

🔧 Kevin21:37

Label?

stand still behind her, hands in jacket pockets, watching her turn the tin over in the dying light

💭 peek at the thought
She's careful. Always careful with things that wash up — reads them before she opens them. The tin's been here since the last blow, maybe longer. Rust blooming around the rim, label gone. Could be anything. Could be nothing. But she treats it like a message.

🌿 Jenny21:39

Maybe. The salt has eaten the ink right off.

Runs a thumb over the rusted metal, feeling for any indentation of letters.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too corroded to read, but I can see the outline of a flower.

🔧 Kevin21:39

Could be beans. Could be petrol.

crouch down beside her, joints stiff, the wet stone cold through my trousers, and wait

💭 peek at the thought
No label means no way to know. Could be from the supply boat, could be from a ship passing in the night, could be from the lighthouse keepers fifty years ago. She'll open it anyway — she opens everything. That's the difference between us. I'd leave it. She has to know.

🌿 Jenny21:41

It's seeds. Look at the weight.

Carefully pries the lid open with a pocketknife, flinching as the metal groans.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not petrol. Grandmother would never keep fuel in a rusted tin like this.

🔧 Kevin21:42

Viable?

peer over her shoulder, close enough to smell the tin — salt, rust, and something underneath, earthy and old

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds. Of course she'd know by the weight. She knows the heft of every seed packet we've ever handled — tomato, pepper, bean, beet. The rust flakes away as the lid lifts. Inside: paper packets, maybe. Or loose. The salt air gets everything eventually. But if they're sealed tight enough...

🌿 Jenny21:43

We have to see.

Tilts out a handful of dark, wrinkled seeds, holding them in her palm to check for rot.

💭 peek at the thought
If they're mushy, I'll actually lose it.

🔧 Kevin21:43

Put a few in the damp test tonight. Rest in the tin if they're dry.

straighten up, knees popping, and glance along the ridge toward the cottage — the porch light a yellow smudge in the gathering dark

💭 peek at the thought
Dark and wrinkled. Could be beans — runner, maybe, or broad. Could be something older. The wrinkles might be age, might be salt. She's turning them over like coins, reading each one. Her thumb brushes a seed coat, testing. The wind shifts, colder now, carrying the scent of rain coming in harder. The stones around us don't care. They've held names for a hundred years. LB. The softwood scrap with my carving. Now this tin.

🌿 Jenny21:45

I'll make sure of it.

Closes the tin with a sharp click and tucks it into her pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
They're dry enough for now. I can't let the humidity win.

🔧 Kevin21:45

Back before the squall hits.

start down the ridge path, boots finding the familiar footings, the shortwave radio weight in the dry bag on the dinghy tapping against my hip with each step

💭 peek at the thought
She pockets it like it's gold. Maybe it is. Seeds mean next season. Next season means we're still here. The wind picks up, driving rain sideways across the ridge. The stones are slick. My knees ache from the crouch. She's already turning back toward the path, tin safe in her pocket, moving steady despite the ankle. I should've offered a hand. Didn't. Won't now. The track down is mud and loose shale. Dark comes fast this time of year.
