The Squall Arrives

The rain intensifies into a downpour as the sky turns a bruised purple. You meet at the cottage as the wind begins to howl through the eaves.

Kevin and Jenny prepared a meal of boiled limpets and sea beet while the air pressure continued to drop. Kevin worked the generator to charge the radio battery while Jenny focused on the cooking and preparation for the approaching storm.

Close the door! Quickly!

Bolt the front door and lean back against it, breathing hard.

💭 peek at the thought
998 hPa. It's plummeting. We need to be inside and sealed up before the wind really hits the eaves.

🔧 Kevin11:21

Got it.

bolt the porch shutters, then check generator oil and kill switch before the exhaust floods

💭 peek at the thought
Front's here. Pressure dropped fast — barometer was 998 this morning, probably under 980 now. Wind backing west like the notebook says. Need to secure the generator, radio battery, and that cracked aerial insulator before the horizontal rain hits.

🌿 Jenny11:22

I'm going to make something with the limpets. We need to eat before the lights go out.

Walk to the stove and put the cast iron skillet on the burner.

💭 peek at the thought
He's in "hardware mode." I can't compete with that, but I can't just stand here while I'm shaking from hunger.

🔧 Kevin11:22

Coffee's in the jar on the shelf. I'll top the radio battery while you cook.

pull the generator out to the porch overhang, check oil, start it under load to charge the battery

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — generator might not hold through the night if the front stalls. Hot food now while we have the stove. Limpets are boiled already, just need heat and fat.

🌿 Jenny11:24

Don't let it flood!

Toss the boiled limpets and chopped sea beet into the hot skillet with a bit of oil.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of that generator is the only thing that makes me feel like we aren't drifting. I need to eat something substantial or I'm going to crash.

🔧 Kevin11:24

Won't. Four hours, then shut it down.

start the generator, watch the ammeter climb, set a mental timer for four hours

💭 peek at the thought
Porch overhang keeps the worst off it. Exhaust points downwind. Just need to watch the tell-tale and oil pressure — diaphragm's new, carb's clean, but six hours under load killed the last one. Four hours max this cycle, then cool.

🌿 Jenny11:26

I'm adding the sea beet now. Smells like the tide.

Stir the limpets and greens in the skillet, letting them sear until the sea beet wilts.

💭 peek at the thought
Four hours. He's so precise. I can't even remember the last time I ate a full meal.

🔧 Kevin11:26

Smells good. Battery at sixty — give it two hours.

wipe hands on a rag, pull two tin plates from the shelf, set them on the table

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's running smooth — oil pressure steady, exhaust clear, ammeter showing charge going into the battery. Radio battery was at 60%, should hit 80% in two hours. Good. Smell of sea beet and limpets in hot oil cuts through the wet diesel and creosote. Haven't eaten since dawn.
