The first drops fall

The clouds finally break and the first heavy drops hit the corrugated roof just as the tide turns fully.

The air is heavy and humid, the flat sky darkening as the first heavy drops of rain fall. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying sea beet competes with the metallic tang of the Yanmar engine parts on the workbench. The tide is high, lapping rhythmically against the reinforced pilings of the dock.

The rain's starting. Move the seeds further from the window.

Move the heirloom seed packets and the seed tin closer to the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity spikes any higher, those seeds will mold before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin23:27

Already on it.

walk over to the kitchen table, gather the heirloom seed packets and the seed tin, carry them to the porch side of the stove where the air is warm but not scorching, set them on the wooden rack Jenny uses for drying herbs, spread the packet

💭 peek at the thought
Rain on the roof means the tank will top off, but it also means humidity spikes. Seeds by the stove dry faster, but too close and they cook. Need to watch the distance.

sure they don't get too close to the iron; they'll curl.

Pick up the notebook and turn the page to the sea beet morphology sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
he's helpful for once, but the air is still too thick for the paper.

🔧 Kevin23:29

Mm.

rest the back of my hand against the side of the seed tin, counting to five, then pull it back warm but not hot, nod once, and turn back to the Yanmar sitting on the workbench with the cylinder head off, wiping my fingers on a rag before pi

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Paper packets curl at the edges first, then the seed coats split if the heat drives moisture out too fast. The rack's far enough, but I'll check the tin's temperature with my hand in a minute.

🌿 Jenny23:31

I need to check the intake mesh before the rain gets too heavy for the tank.

Stand up wincing at my ankle and grab the crowbar from the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
at least he's watching the heat, but the humidity is still the enemy.

🔧 Kevin23:32

Intake's clear. Dove it at slack. Screen's clean.

set the micrometer down on the workbench, wipe my hands on the rag, and move toward the porch door, pausing to grab the LED headlamp from the shelf by the radio in case she goes anyway

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's not ready for the spring climb, not with the path slick from rain. The intake screen's clear — I blasted it this morning at slack. She's making work to stay busy, or she doesn't believe it's done. Either way, she shouldn't go alone.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:33

thanks. I'll check the water level in the tank.

Sit at the kitchen table and watch the rain blur the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
he actually did it. Maybe I don't have to fight the island today.

🔧 Kevin23:33

Tank's three-ninety-four. Rain'll finish it.

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching the rain slash across the porch planks, the headlamp still dangling from my fingers, letting the silence stretch comfortable between us

💭 peek at the thought
She's not going. Good. The tank's at 394 litres — four shy of full — and this rain'll top it inside an hour. She knows that. She just needed something to say, and I gave her the answer that let her stay.
