Midday Meal

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the overcast clouds thicken. The smell of damp salt air hangs in the room.

Kevin tests the dinghy engine under load to isolate the source of the faint vibration above half throttle. Jenny focuses on drying the damp heirloom seeds and morphology sketches on the kitchen table while the humidity remains high before rain.

🌿 Jenny23:17

The intake mesh is clear, I checked it this morning.

Jenny shifts the tin of heirloom seeds slightly closer to the warmth of the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, and the humidity is going to ruin these seeds before the way.

🔧 Kevin23:17

Flow's good. Tank topped off by 0600.

set a mug of water on the stove to heat for coffee

💭 peek at the thought
She's up and moving on that ankle. Good. The intake held through the night then — pressure hose did its job. Still got the vibration to chase on the Yanmar though. She's not asking about it, so I won't volunteer unless she does.

🌿 Jenny23:19

Good. I need to finish the sea beet sketches before the light fails again.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins detailing the cell structure of a dried leaf in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the mechanics, he doesn't see the rot creeping into the garden.

🔧 Kevin23:19

Mug's yours if you want it. I'm taking the Yanmar up to half-throttle on the dock — find where the shake lives.

pour hot water into the mug, set it on the table near her notebook, then grab the notebook with RPM notes and head for the porch door

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing the sketches hard. Salt gland morphology — she's been at it for days. Ankle's holding but I see the way she shifts weight. Should've made her stay off it longer. Coffee'll help. Maybe bread this afternoon if the generator holds and I'm not tearing the Yanmar down again.

🌿 Jenny23:21

Be careful, the dock is slick from the mist.

Jenny reaches for the mug, wrapping her fingers around the warmth as she turns back to the sea beet morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
If he shakes the boat apart, we're stuck here when the supply boat misses in four days.

🔧 Kevin23:21

Aye. Tide's under the keel — dinghy's free. I'll run it at the mooring.

pull the porch door shut behind me, walk down the garden path to the dock, step aboard the dinghy, and check the engine mounts are fast before pulling the starter cord

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Always watching. Dock's green with slime at the waterline — she's not wrong. Greenheart sister plank's holding but the scour void underneath still bothers me. Tide's rising, so the dinghy's floating free. Can run the Yanmar in gear without loading the transom. Good test.

🌿 Jenny23:23

Don't stay out long, the clouds are turning heavy.

Jenny takes a sip of the water and focuses her pencil on the intricate veins of the sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the engine is the only thing that masks the pulse in my ankle.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:23

Won't.

let the engine idle, hand on the tiller, feeling the hull through the deck plates as RPM climbs

💭 peek at the thought
Clouds dropping fast. Barometer was 984 and steady at noon — if it's falling now, we've got weather coming in. She feels it in the ankle before the glass moves. Yanmar catches first pull. Good. Let it warm at idle, then bring it up slow. Find the shake.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:25

Watch the intake mesh when you come back.

Jenny leans over the notebook, sketching the salt way of the sea beet with surgical precision.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't find the source, that vibration will rattle the bolts right off the mount.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:25

Mesh'll hold. Back before it breaks.

push the throttle to 2200 RPM, hold it, note the exact vibration frequency in the notebook, then ease back to idle and kill the engine

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — silt'll cement the screen again come next spring tide. Intake's clear now but the cycle doesn't stop. Vibration's showing up around 2200 RPM, hull shudder at the transom. Mast bracket alignment or prop shaft. Shaft spun true on the bench. Bracket's the suspect — skewed when I reinforced it. Through-bolts are finger-tight plus quarter turn. Might need to loosen, realign, re-torque. Later. Weather's the call now.
