Drying Seeds and Falling Pressure
Rain continues to drum against the roof while Jenny spreads damp heirloom seed packets across paper near the stove. Kevin sits at the table, checking the barometer as the pressure drops further.
Kevin checked the dinghy's seacocks and verified the mooring lines while the barometer continued to fall. Jenny tended to her ankle and worked on drying the heirloom seeds by the stove. The storm's approach was confirmed by the rapidly dropping pressure.
It's going to get worse before it gets better.
Jenny flinches as she shifts her swollen ankle, moving closer to the warmth of the wood stove.

Barometer's 974. Dropped four in the hour. We've got six, maybe eight hours before it hits us proper.
Check the generator fuel line and top off the tank from the reserve can while the stove's hot enough to keep diesel flowing.

Make sure the dinghy is double-cleated.
Jenny reaches for her notebook to sketch a quick, frustrated Detail of the sea much's salt glands.

Already did it. Second stern spring on the heavy weather line. Bow line's good. She'll ride it out.
Walk to the porch and check the radio aerial tension — the new insulator held last blow, but this one's backing west and the fetch is longer.

Check the seacocks one more time.
Jenny pulls the heirloom seed tin closer to the heat of the stove, the metal warm against her palm.

Port seacock's greased and shut. Starboard's the head — open for the hose. I'll close it before we turn in.
Step back inside, pull on the oilskins hanging by the door, and head down to the dinghy to verify both seacocks by hand.
