The 0200 Radio Call
Kevin sits at the shortwave in the dim pre-dawn, headset on, calling Tom on the agreed frequency. Jenny lies on the narrow bunk, awake, listening. The rain hammers the roof. The barometer reads 970 hPa. The wind has shifted west and freshened — gusts rattling the porch door brace. The generator hums steady outside.
Kevin attempted to contact Tom on shortwave but received no reply; Jenny sketched sea beet leaf morphology while her ankle poultice remained in place. The barometer held steady at 978 hPa during warm, intermittent rain.
Tom. Kevin. 0200 check. Barometer nine-seven-zero. West wind, gusting. Supply boat window closed. You copy? Over.
hold the microphone steady, thumb on the transmit button, wait through the static for any reply

Jenny — watch the needle on the barometer, hand hovering over the throbbing ankle under the edge of the blanket.

Tom. Kevin. Still here. Still trying. Over.
release the transmit button, listen through the static, thumb ready to key again

Kevin, stop. Save the battery.
Sit up on the bunk, wincing as the weight shifts on the ankle, and reach for the notebook.

(silence, just the exhale through the nose)
thumb off the transmit button, reach up and switch the set to receive only, set the headphones on the shelf, turn back toward the bunk

Is the tin still dry enough?
Open the notebook to a fresh page and begin sketching the cross-section of the sea beet leaf.
