The storm intensifies

Kevin and Jenny are inside as the wind picks up, howling through the eaves. The rain has turned into a downpour.

Kevin runs the generator under load to verify the exhaust tape seal and charges the radio battery. Jenny rests at the cottage, monitoring her ankle while the pressure continues to drop. The heavy air suggests the approaching storm is imminent.

🌿 Jenny03:57

The limpets are ready.

Limp carefully to the stove and ladle the broth into a bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even stand properly and the house is practically screaming. I need protein if I'm going to fight this fever.

Eat it hot. I'll check the exhaust tape on the genny while you do.

Walk to the generator shed, flashlight in hand, to inspect the exhaust tape repair under load.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's screaming now. Barometer's still dropping. She's moving better on that ankle but the heat's still coming off her. Need to get calories in her before the generator cuts out again.

Don't stay out there in the wind too long.

Sit at the kitchen table, clutching the warm bowl with both hands and breathing through the throbbing.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always running to the machines while I'm sitting here literally rotting. My ankle feels like fire.

Ten minutes. Back before the bowl's cold.

Pull the shed door shut behind me, brace against the gust, and crouch at the generator exhaust manifold with the flashlight beam tight on the self-amalgamating tape wrap.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me like I'm the one who might not come back. The tape held twelve hours last check. If it blows now, we lose charging, lose radio, lose the only heat that isn't wood. Five litres of diesel left. Have to nurse it.

🌿 Jenny04:01

Hurry, please.

Take a shaky sip of the broth and

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is an eternity when your pulse is drumming in your leg. The barometer is dropping so fast I can feel it in my teeth.

🔧 Kevin04:02

Tape's good. Oil's good. Six hours more if we cycle her. Five litres diesel left.

Close the shed door, latch it tight against the wind, and walk back to the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Tape's holding. No new cracks, no smoke bleeding through the wrap. Manifold's hot as hell but the repair's solid. Oil level's fine. Another six hours easy if I let her cool between cycles. Should tell her that. Should tell her the diesel count too. She hates when I don't.

🌿 Jenny04:03

Come inside, it's freezing.

Set the bowl down with a trembling hand and rub the swollen skin around my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Five litres? That's not enough if the storm lasts two days. I'm too tired to even do the math.

🔧 Kevin04:03

Coming.

Step through the porch door, shake the rain off my jacket, and close it hard against the gale. Move to the stove, lay a fresh split of driftwood on the coals, and watch it catch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold through. The broth barely touched the chill. Ankle's still hot under my fingers when I checked this morning — streaks fading but the bone-deep heat hasn't broken. Antibiotics are down to the last two days. If the fever spikes again tonight...
