The Storm Breaks

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first gust of wind rattles the roof. The rain begins to drum heavily against the tin metal.

The air grows heavy as the cloud cover thick, signaling an approaching storm front. Kevin and Jenny retreat to the cottage to secure the gear and manage the drying seeds while the barometer continues its steady drop.

Check theches on the garden gate again, Kevin.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and reach for my notebook to sketch the cloud formations through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if the wind shifts north, the seedlings in the garden will be flattened out.

Gate's on the list. Roof first.

Walk to the porch door, pull it open a hand's width, and lean out to check the roof ridge line and the radio mast guy wires against the dark sky.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer's been screaming it all day. She's worried about the garden gate when the roof might not hold — but I'll check it because she asked, and because loose hardware becomes flying hardware in seventy knots.

Watch out for the loose tile.

Wrap the clean, damp cloth tighter around my swollen ankle to dull the throbbing.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to catch a chill if he stays out there in that humidity, and then I'll have to nurse him too.

Seen it. Won't step under it.

Step fully onto the porch, crouch under the eave to avoid the tile's fall line, and run my hand along the mast guys — checking tension, feeling for fray at the turnbuckles.

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed the loose tile before I did. Always sees what I miss when I'm looking too far out.

🌿 Jenny04:11

Come back inside, the pressure is dropping too fast.

Pull my knees up to my chest, watching the rain racing down the window glass on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If that mast goes down, the radio goes, and I'm truly alone if this infection gets worse.

🔧 Kevin04:11

Coming in.

Duck back through the porch door, pull it shut against the gust, slide the bolt home, and move to the wood stove to add two splits of dry firewood before the draft reverses.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Pressure's falling like a stone and the wind's backing — classic bomb cyclogenesis. No point standing on a wet porch watching the mast when I should be inside securing what matters.

🌿 Jenny04:13

It's going to be a night.

Reach for the seed tin, running my thumb over the cold metal, checking for any dampness inside.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now; I hope the roof holds up better than the garden did.

🔧 Kevin04:13

Yeah. Generator's got four hours fuel at this load. Radio battery's charged. Water tank's full. We've got wood, tins, antibiotics for three days if your gut holds them.

Cross to the radio shelf, flip the shortwave to Tom's frequency, lower the squelch until static hisses, and settle onto the wooden chair to listen — one hand on the mic, the other resting on the table near her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
A night. Maybe more. The tin's cold — good, means the seal's holding. She's checking seeds while the barometer dives. That's my Jenny.
