The Storm Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain lash the roof as the wind howls through the eaves. You are huddled inside, the lantern light flickering as the storm rattles the window panes.

The rain continues steadily against the cottage as the atmospheric pressure continues to drop, signaling an approaching storm. Jenny rests while managing her swollen ankle while Kevin monitors the water tank and the falling tide.

🔧 Kevin04:14

Kevin — walk to the porch door and crack it open to check the generator and radio mast.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm's here. Barometer's been dropping all day. Need to check the generator lashings held and the radio battery's charged before the aerial goes.

🌿 Jenny04:17

Kevin! The pressure is dropping too fast for that!

way back and wince as the movement throbs in my ankle, clutching the tin of seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to rip the mast off if he isn't careful with those cables.

🔧 Kevin04:17

Get back from the door. Now.

Step onto the porch, grab the spare tarp and timber strips, batten the leading edge under the ridge beam and weight it with the tool bag.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind's backing southwest fast. Barometer was 982 and falling steady — now it's screaming. Generator lashings and radio mast need checking but not with the door wide open. Get back inside, secure the porch first.

🌿 Jenny04:19

The wind won't hold that weight! Come inside!

watch through the glass, my hand shaking as I sketch the frantic angle of the rain against the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get swept off if that gust catches the tarp, he's so reckless.

🔧 Kevin04:19

The tarp's leading edge is tucked. Need weight on the corners. Greenheart offcuts on the dock.

Pull the porch door shut and latch it, move to the kitchen window facing the dock to assess the run.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Tool bag's not enough ballast for this wind. But the tarp's already leading-edged under the ridge beam — if I leave it loose it'll peel the roof. Need proper weight. The greenheart offcuts on the dock are heavy. But the dock's where the wind hits hardest.

🌿 Jenny04:21

Don't go out there to the dock! The tide is already surging.

pull my ankle up onto the chair, watching the throbbing pulse in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If those offcuts float away the whole project is ruined and I can't walk after them.

🔧 Kevin04:21

Not going to the dock. Garden stakes. I'll run lines from the porch brackets.

Grab the coil of new half-inch three-strand rope from the crate, two carabiners, and head out the porch door into the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide surging on top of this wind. Dock's the wrong place to be. But the tarp corners will peel without weight. The oak stakes at the garden corners — they're driven, holding the shade cloth. Could strip two and run line back to the porch brackets. Shorter run, less exposure.

🌿 Jenny04:23

Kevin, the wind is turning just way come back!

stand by the window, pressing my palm against the cold glass to watch his silhouette disappear into the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to slip in that mud and I can't go get him.
